Chapter Nine: Explanation of the Causes of Disease Chapter Nine: Explanation of the Causes of Disease Then, the sage Rigpai Yeshe said, "O great sage, listen! There are three causes that generate diseases: origination, accumulation and aggravation, and provocation. That which originates and propagates is the cause of origination. That which accumulates and increases is the cause of accumulation and aggravation. That which provokes after accumulation is the cause of provocation. The causes of origination are time, sense faculties, and behavior. Diseases are generated due to deficiency, excess, or perversion. Time is of three types: hot season, cold season, and rainy season. Deficiency is when heat, cold, and rainfall are small. Excess is when they are large and intense. Perversion is when they are absent. The five sense faculties and their five objects: being small or not engaging with them is deficiency; excessive indulgence is excess; being too close or too far, too large or too small, fear or disgust, are said to be perverse engagements. Behavior is of three types: body, speech, and mind. Being small or not engaging is deficiency; excessive indulgence is excess; suppression, squeezing, twisting, and non-virtue are perverse behaviors. Accumulation, aggravation, and pacification have three aspects: cause, nature, and time. The cause is that roughness, etc., possessing warmth, accumulates wind. Coldness aggravates it, and oiliness and warmth pacify earth. Similarly, sharpness, etc., possessing coolness, accumulates bile. Heat aggravates it, and dullness, etc., possessing coolness, pacifies it. Heaviness, oiliness, and coolness accumulate phlegm. Warmth aggravates it, and roughness, etc., pacify it. The nature is that the increase of one's own state is accumulation. Desiring qualities that are contrary to the cause and conflicting, hating entering the perverse path, and manifesting one's own signs. One's own state, a balanced state, is being without disease and pacification. Time is that autumn, etc., are the three times for wind. Bile is summer, and phlegm is late winter. In autumn, lightness and roughness, environment, body, food, and behavior are all similar, accumulating wind, and it will not be aggravated by warmth. In summer, it is aggravated by the arising of rain, wind, and cold. In autumn, it is pacified by oiliness and warmth. In summer, oiliness and coolness accumulate bile and do not aggravate it. Oiliness and warmth aggravate it in autumn, and coolness pacifies it in early winter. In late winter, coolness, oiliness, and heaviness accumulate phlegm. Being covered does not aggravate it, and the sunlight in spring, warmth aggravates it, and autumn lightness and roughness pacify it. Even if the time for the light has not arrived, it can still have an immediate effect due to food and behavior. Especially provocation

There are two types of conditions: common and specific. The common conditions that cause all diseases are: seasonal changes, demons, poisons, unsuitable foods, incorrect treatments, and the awakening of negative karma. Specific conditions: excessive consumption of rough substances, fatigue from sexual desire, fasting, insomnia, working on an empty stomach, strenuous physical and verbal activities, excessive bleeding, severe vomiting and diarrhea, being exposed to cold winds, crying exhaustedly, excessive grief, overwork, consuming non-nutritious foods, over-reliance, suppressed strength, and forceful squeezing. These factors can trigger lung disease. Excessive consumption of spicy, pungent, and oily substances, the arising of strong jealousy and hatred in the mind, sleeping at noon, engaging in strenuous activities after sitting, carrying unbearable weights, digging the earth, pulling a bow, fighting, dangers from running and walking, being struck by a horse, falling into a cliff, being trapped in darkness, being struck by stones or sticks, excessive consumption of meat, butter, brown sugar, alcohol, and other foods. These factors can trigger bile fever. Excessive consumption of sweet, heavy, cold, and oily substances, sitting lazily after a full meal, sleeping during the day, sleeping in damp places, entering water, wearing thin, wet clothes, consuming newly harvested grains, consuming food damaged by hail, consuming raw meat, lean meat, animal fat, oil, consuming rotten ghee, radishes, cabbage, consuming all raw foods such as raw garlic, consuming undercooked, burnt, or indigestible foods, drinking raw goat milk, yogurt, whey, cold water, cold tea, overeating, or eating the next meal before the previous one is digested. These factors can trigger cold phlegm disease. The mixture of these factors can lead to mixed diseases. Thus it is said. In the Secret Quintessential Instructions of the Eight Branches of the Ambrosia Heart Tantra, the ninth chapter explains the causes of diseases.
