A Brief Explanation of Discrimination and Abiding: The Oral Tradition of Nyakla A Brief Explanation of Discrimination and Abiding: The Oral Tradition of Nyakla In the context of Dzogchen, the basis of obscuration is called rigpa (觉性, ज्ञान, jñāna, awareness), and the defilement of obscuration is called sem (心, चित्त, citta, mind). The difference between sem, which is confused, and rigpa, which is not confused, is extremely great in terms of mere appearance. Therefore, by distinguishing sem and rigpa separately, rigpa is introduced in its own state, which is called discrimination. In terms of the actual state, even the confused sem is not separate by a particle from the non-erroneous rigpa. Therefore, there is no need for any acceptance or rejection, or any distinction, in any appearance or sem that encompasses both samsara and nirvana. To be certain of the single sphere of rigpa-emptiness is called abiding. By relying on discrimination, one recognizes the uncorrected, pristine rigpa. By relying on abiding, one recognizes that whatever good or bad thoughts arise, they never stray from the rigpa that is the basis of liberation, and that they are self-arising and self-liberating like water and waves. This is called manifestly showing self-liberation. In terms of the actual state, all thoughts do not stray from the single rigpa, and that rigpa has never been confused and is the great primordial liberation. Therefore, since liberation and rigpa, the dharmata, are inseparable, there is nothing that cannot be liberated, and therefore there is no way of liberation or liberation itself. In terms of appearance, liberation is the confused sem that arises due to not recognizing rigpa itself, and these suddenly arising thoughts together with their objects are what need to be liberated. Among these, first, whatever thoughts arise, they seem to be something other than rigpa, and even if the doubt arises, "I am confused," as soon as it is recognized by the memory of the innate, it is recognized as the manifestation of rigpa itself and is liberated, just like meeting someone familiar from the past. This is one. In the middle, the grasping of all appearing thoughts as something other than rigpa becomes smaller and smaller, and one no longer relies so much on the recognition of memory. For example, like a snake's knot unraveling, the thoughts themselves are purified as self-arising and self-liberating in the nature of innate rigpa. This is two. Finally, rigpa and thoughts are inseparable, and whatever appears is naturally empty in the nature of innate rigpa. The key is that appearance is not cut off externally and rigpa is not cut off internally. Even if various good and bad objects appear and various good and bad thoughts arise, they do not harm rigpa in any way, and even if they do not appear or arise,

There is no benefit to rigpa. For example, just as a thief entering an empty house cannot cause any benefit or harm of gain or loss, when it has not arisen, rigpa has the benefit of being easier to liberate; when it has arisen, there is no harm of being deluded and lost, liberation in the state of inseparability of liberation and what will be liberated, these three are the ways of liberation. In this way, by repeatedly familiarizing oneself with the practice of self-liberation of rigpa, from the path of accumulation to the extreme of existence, the two obscurations gradually become more and more liberated, and finally, when the vajra-like wisdom completely liberates the obscuration of the three existences, ultimate liberation, the precious state of complete enlightenment, will be manifested. This is also because of practicing the secret path of Dzogchen, a good realization has arisen, and for this reason, it was written by Rablingpa, who only holds the name of the lineage of Padmasambhava's vidyadhara mantra. A brief explanation of the meaning of distinguishing and la bzla, the oral tradition of Nyakla.
