English version: The king of Bi praised him, saying, 'Reciting it three thousand times will extend your life by fifteen years.' Then he released him. During the Tianbao era (742-756 AD) of the Tang Dynasty, there was a judge named Zhang, whose name has been lost, who was sent on a mission to Huainan. As he was about to cross the Huai River, a man in a yellow shirt ran up from behind, asking for a ride. The boatman wanted to push him away, but Judge Zhang said, 'No. What difficulty is there in carrying one commoner across the Huai River?' Seeing that the man in the yellow shirt was hungry, he fed him with leftover food. The man thanked him with shame. After crossing the river, they parted ways. A moment later, he arrived at the post station, and the man was already at the door. Judge Zhang disliked him in his heart, saying, 'I just ferried you across the river, why have you come again?' The man replied, 'I want to discuss something with the judge, which cannot be heard by those around you.' Judge Zhang dismissed those around him, and the man said, 'I am ordered to take you, to drown you in the Huai River. Fortunately, I received your kindness, so it can only be delayed for one day.' Judge Zhang prostrated himself on the ground, begging for help. The man replied, 'If you can recite the 'Life-Extending Sutra' a thousand times within a day, you may still extend your life.' After speaking, he left. When he reached the door, he turned back and said, 'Do you know the 'Life-Extending Sutra'? It is the 'Diamond Sutra' in the human world.' Judge Zhang said, 'It is already late today, how can I recite a thousand times?' The man replied, 'As long as people recite it, it is fine.' Judge Zhang then summoned dozens of people from his office to recite together. By evening, they had indeed finished reciting a thousand times. The ghost came again, saying, 'The judge has been spared from death, but must pay a visit to the King of the Underworld.' The crowd saw Judge Zhang, following the yellow-shirted official together. Judge Zhang saw the King of the Underworld, who said that reciting the sutras should add ten years to his lifespan, and released him to be reborn. Avoiding Livestock Rebirth During the Song Dynasty, there was a Jinshi (successful candidate in the highest imperial examinations) named Zhu in Suzhou Prefecture, who only studied for the imperial examinations and did not understand Buddhism. One day, he was out for a walk and arrived at Tiger Hill Temple, where he encountered Chan Master Foyin lecturing on the 'Diamond Sutra', explaining the four-line verse 'All conditioned phenomena' and explaining the general meaning of Buddhism to him. Jinshi Zhu was very happy to hear this, thinking that he had never heard such Buddhist teachings before. The next day, he went to the streets and alleys and found a house that was no different from the scene in his dream. He knocked on the door, and the owner of the house, seeing the Jinshi (a successful candidate in the highest imperial examinations) arrive, hurriedly greeted him. Zhu asked what was going on in the kitchen just now. The owner said that there were six puppies in the kitchen, one of whom had died. Zhu was shocked and sweating profusely. He said to himself, 'If it weren't for the power of hearing the Buddha's Dharma, I would almost have been reborn as a dog.' Therefore, he insisted on reciting the Diamond Sutra, without interruption in the cold or heat, and lived to be eighty-nine years old. On the fifteenth day of August, he invited teachers and friends to see him off, ascended to the treetops in the back garden, said four lines of verse, and bid farewell to everyone, passing away peacefully while standing. Ru Yuan (person's name) Lü Wenzhan (person's name), served as the county magistrate of Langzhong in the third year of Kaiyuan (715 AD), and was very fond of Buddhist scriptures, especially focusing on reciting the Diamond Sutra, reaching more than 30,000 times, with miraculous responses. As he grew old, three teeth fell out, and he earnestly prayed while reciting the scriptures, and the teeth grew back as before.
