Collection of Instructions by Tsemonpa Sonam Gyaltsen, JTSZ44: 'A Garland of Admonitions for Future Worthies' 3-397 ༄༅། །A Garland of Admonitions for Future Worthies ༄༅། །A Garland of Admonitions for Future Worthies ༄༅། །Om, may there be auspiciousness! I prostrate to the lotus feet with loving stamens, I prostrate to the one who triumphs on the crown of my head as an offering, I prostrate to the one who bestows perfect wisdom, I prostrate to the one whose speech possesses sixty qualities. Though one has not even a speck of fault, and one's being is adorned with the glory of qualities, flawed bad friends, like a flock of demonic birds, sing in the unpleasant dark holes. The teachings of the Buddha, like a radiant green horse, a friend who expands the lotus lake of many scholars, an ornament that illuminates the Great Vehicle of activity, stainless excellent speech shines brightly in the sky. However, most who rely on bad friends are blind. In the vast sky of knowledge, the teacher is like the lord of stars, completing the cycle. When the lotus of the wise opens, they dwell in the mud of laziness. The stream of benefit and happiness relies on the ocean of love. The root of good relationships is nourished by the mud of the Tripitaka. Having abandoned weariness and heat, even if one makes the garden of good friends flourish, the shameless hailstorm of late summer destroys the joy and nectar. The leaves of bad speech are enjoyed in the unpleasant winter. Therefore, one should abandon the ways of associating with people in degenerate times. One's own faults are like a collection of foul-smelling vomit. Hypocritical bats seize them with dark beaks. To the faultless good teacher, like the pure gold earth, they laboriously divide and call it filthy. Evil-doers spread their wings wide on the vast path of the gods. Therefore, the wise should abandon the flock of crows. The speech of the learned is like an ocean of nectar, the essence churned by wisdom and reason, a delicious food with a hundred flavors. Even if one gives to friends with selfless benefit, like the milk of the five-faced lion king, the good teacher is not a vessel for bad conduct. Therefore, the wise should abandon the friend who is not a suitable vessel. Even if one stays long in the assembly of many scholars, one is deprived of excellent speech by abandoning wisdom and diligence. The mind is moved by demons, so one wanders in all directions, attributing one's own faults to the teachers. In the end, like a golden jackal, one becomes an enemy in disguise. Therefore, all wise ones should abandon such students. As said above, one should avoid certain bad friends. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
