Explanation of the Short Verse Praise Explanation of the Short Verse Praise Herein is the Explanation of the Short Verse Praise. Om Svasti. This is the single verse praise that came from the noble Cloud of Jewels: Widely renowned, greatly famous! Great Hero, mighty warrior! One who transcends the suffering of existence! I prostrate and pay homage to the one who overcomes afflictions! Thus it is said. Among them, "widely renowned" means that this Bhagavan, for countless great kalpas and more, solely wishing to benefit and bring happiness to sentient beings, gave immeasurable things that are difficult to give, such as his own body, and also practiced immeasurable practices of the six perfections. Therefore, his fame matches reality and is widely spread. This shows the generation of bodhicitta and the accumulation of merit. One should understand that all the causes of great enlightenment are gathered by this. "Greatly famous" refers to the one who possesses a body adorned with the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor signs, a voice with sixty qualities, ten powers, four fearlessnesses, and eighteen unshared qualities, an ocean of virtues. Because he possesses such virtues, he is unparalleled in the three realms of existence. Thus, he is praised by all beings, including gods. One should understand that this shows all the qualities of the teacher himself. In some current sutra versions, it appears as "widely renowned, greatly wise," but this version is more reasonable. "Great Hero" means that the asceticism of non-Buddhists is merely striving to torment the body, never abandoning all sins, lacking extremely pure samadhi, and their wisdom is accompanied by wrong views. Therefore, they only hold the name of ascetic. Hearers, solitary realizers, and bodhisattvas are heroes because they possess pure asceticism of the three trainings: discipline, samadhi, and wisdom. "Great" means the meaning of being greater than all. If one becomes great merely by being greater than some things, then everything would become great. Therefore, it is impossible to be greater than that, let alone equal. Otherwise, it would be impossible to count, so great is it.

The only teacher, who is skilled in the three trainings himself, and who is the great hero because he places countless beings in the asceticism of the three trainings. A hero means conquering enemies. Enemies are the demons of afflictions, the demons of aggregates, the demons of death, and the evil son of the gods. Even the Hearers and Solitary Realizers without remainder think that they have conquered these, but others cannot conquer them, so they are not truly brave. But the Bhagavan himself has conquered the habitual tendencies and their places, and in all directions and at all times he conquers countless demons, so he is a great hero. Existence is the three realms of desire, form, and formlessness, all of which are included in the three realms, the nature of the five aggregates. Sorrow is suffering, all of which is included in three or eight sufferings. Whatever suffering arises from the destruction of the wheel of delusion produced by causes and conditions is called sorrow. For example, when children and wives die, and houses and so on are destroyed, suffering arises, so it is accompanied by sorrow. Thus, it is understood as it is. Therefore, one should deeply realize that impermanence is suffering. He has crossed over such a river of sorrow. The lesser vehicles think that the teacher has abandoned these sufferings, but they think that there is still a remainder until he has taught the transcendence of sorrow. That is not so, because it is contradictory to be accompanied by these as these subtle habitual tendencies gradually become purified. Therefore, the Great Hero should not be regarded as an emanation body, as one who has a heap of suffering. Afflictions are all the root afflictions and near afflictions. These also include all that is included in desire, anger, pride, ignorance, view of the perishable aggregate, wrong view, extreme view, holding views as supreme, holding morality and asceticism as supreme, and all that is to be abandoned by seeing and meditating. Transcending means completely abandoning all these habitual tendencies together with the obscurations to knowledge. That is, from the four rivers of desire, existence, ignorance, and views.

Transcending. Such a teacher, accomplished from the perfect path, possessing perfect abandonment and wisdom, to that, with such knowing faith, one makes prostrations, which is to say, offering homage and reverence. With the body, one offers homage, and with the mind, one reveres with joy. Here it is said: Having generated the supreme bodhicitta, practicing austerities for three countless eons, having perfected the six perfections, great fame, I bow to you. Whose marks and signs are exceedingly clear, whose speech is vajra-like, possessing the wisdom of all-knowing, the place praised by all gods and humans, great renown, I bow to you. Morality, concentration, and wisdom, abiding in the supreme stainless state, disciples are supreme, surrounded by peace, great sage, I bow to you. That you subdued the four maras, not by strength of arms, nor by weapons, but by the wisdom of utter tranquility, great hero, I bow to you. Liberated from karma and suffering, having realized the unconditioned, leading to the place free from rebirth, transcending the sorrow of existence, I bow. Having completely abandoned all afflictions of the three realms, transcending the ground of ignorance and habitual tendencies, delivering these beings from the four rivers, I bow to that one who has transcended afflictions. If one knows the aspects of bodhicitta and the six perfections, the story of the teacher's generation of bodhicitta and accumulation of merit, and the qualities of the Victorious One, vastness, and the three trainings, subduing the four maras and the truth of suffering, the principles of karma and abandonment and realization, then one can speak extensively on the meaning of this praise. The merit of clarifying a little the meaning of the sutras, which are difficult to understand in few words, is dedicated to all beings. This was also said by Tāranātha. Empty page.
