Instructions from Tāranātha to Bhikṣu Kunga Pelden Instructions from Tāranātha to Bhikṣu Kunga Pelden Oṃ Svasti. To the lama who is the embodiment of the four kāyas, I pray with unwavering faith. May these three words of essential advice resonate with the student's mind. Having obtained this human body once, is there really time to live leisurely? Without wasting life in distraction, seek to discipline your own mind. If you do not whip yourself with the whip of diligence, then give up hope of being urged by others. Look at all the people of the country, friends, and enemies. You do not need other exhortations for virtuous deeds. When you encounter profound Dharma teachings, strive to benefit from the practice. Just as you profit from exchanging goods with each other, draw the essence from the depths of the great meditators. If you do not cut the bonds of desire, even if you give up a hundred, you will attract a thousand. Wasting life in deceitful thoughts, bearing the name of a renunciate is truly shameful. Life is uncertain, and it is unknown when death will come. Without being greedy in meditation and practice, you run after fame and gain. There is a danger of being carried away by the winds of the eight worldly concerns. A virtuous deed that benefits your own mind, even if others do not understand, is fine. Do not desire a large following or respect. There is a danger that subtle experiences will disappear. Even if the sun of realization dawns, if all the people near and far do not understand, they will be deeply ashamed. Meditation practice does not go to the point. No matter who you benefit, whether enemies or friends, unless your mind is moistened with compassion, do not boast even for a moment, otherwise the seed of enlightenment will not be sown. In general, all obstacles come to those who are conspicuous. Practicing in secret is very important. Even if you benefit the people of the entire country, if you are carried away by jealousy, it is not benefiting others. Even if you spend your life in practice, if you are carried away by arrogance, you will fall into a cliff. When experiences and qualities arise, if you boast to others, they will immediately diminish. When benefiting beings and fame arise, be careful that all obstacles from demons may come. Demons are not somewhere else; being distracted from Dharma practice is the demon itself. No matter how important companions are, they only know worldly affairs. Since you have vowed to give up this life, be with those who are connected.

Do not resort to trickery! Enjoyment and retinue are the cause of distraction, at that time there is no need to attract fortune. The tools of autonomy are the basis of bondage, therefore do not be stingy and cling to them like a dead person. Endless idle talk is the enemy of virtuous deeds, not speaking nonsense, keeping silent is essential. Wandering in villages is the cause of losing cattle, staying in a quiet place is courageous. Now, there is only one essence of practice, which is to cultivate unwavering devotion. There are three categories of practice, namely contemplating impermanence, suffering, and karma. There are two roots of practice, namely unfeigned sincerity and great compassion. Urge yourself with the impermanence of death, thinking of suffering can abandon attachment, thinking of karma can purify behavior. Compassion and non-elaboration are the core of meditation, and the root of all this is devotion. Anger and competitive mind should dissolve into the dharma realm, if there is no longer the entanglement of delusion, then virtuous deeds become essential. In short, if you want to do Dharma, you must act according to the Dharma. The practice of liberating from life, whether it is listening, thinking, or meditating, do not just use it to deceive others. It is useless to only know a little Dharma, because one's own mind stream still remains in an ordinary state. Without the key points of practice, even just foolishly meditating will lose the essence. If genuine renunciation does not arise from the heart, then the so-called great meditator is just accumulating fertilizer on the mountain. For those who do not value karma and are careless, hoping to become an accomplished one is the cause of falling into hell. Without love, compassion, and bodhicitta, empty words are like a whip with a broken rope. If the inner breath does not dissolve into wisdom, then the techniques of practicing channels and winds become the Dharma of non-Buddhists. The vows of secret mantra wander in the marketplace, and the yogi who renounces everything falls into the status of an outcast. Also, those who hold good views and behaviors, there is a danger of accumulating the sin of slandering others. Even if you strive to practice day and night, you must deeply understand these pitfalls. Focus wholeheartedly on the Dharma, tame your mind stream, maintain good behavior, do not completely fall into vulgarity, and maintain mindfulness. Then, the desired results will manifest. This is the advice given by Taranatha to the hermitage dweller Kunga Palden. Auspiciousness! The advice given by Taranatha to the hermitage dweller Kunga Palden.
