Instructions to the great scholars, Sherab Rinchen and Paljor Namgyal. Instructions to the great scholars, Sherab Rinchen and Paljor Namgyal. Also, one oral instruction: I prostrate to all the lamas! The essence of practice is condensed into: conventional great compassion, and ultimate freedom from elaboration. The key to taking the pure appearance of the deity's form as a path is the practice of the mantra's essence. Even if a sudden event of happiness or suffering occurs, what deeper practice is there than to take whatever arises as the path? The radiant king, through his magical power, saw this key point and instructed his heart-son, Jampa'i Pal. When you yourself are happy and content, all beings who have been your mothers also only want to be happy. It is not enough for you alone to be happy; I wish that all of them could attain happiness. Please think about this again and again in your mind. When you are happy, dedicate the happiness to all beings. May benefit and happiness fill the sky. Repeat this again and again in your speech. If you want to have happiness, you must strive for virtuous actions, so think, "I must strive for virtue." And may all beings in the three realms abide in virtue. Please repeatedly send forth this aspiration. It is very important to diligently accomplish the means to lead yourself and others into virtue. Happiness is the conventional path. When unwanted suffering occurs, meditate on compassion for those who suffer. Turn away from sinful actions. When happy, take loving-kindness as the path, and when suffering, take compassion as the path. The appearance of happiness and suffering is nothing more than an illusion; in ultimate reality, it does not exist. The body is like a corpse; no matter how much you indulge in desirable objects, no feeling of happiness will arise. Even if it is cut into pieces or burned by fire, there is no suffering in it. If there is no body, then the mind is also invisible and unobstructed, so there is no happiness or suffering related to objects. Since there is nothing other than the body and mind that experiences suffering, the giver and receiver of happiness are illusions, and the giver and receiver of suffering do not exist. Rest in equanimity in the state of non-existence. Although the appearance of happiness and suffering does not cease, turn away from attachment to them. If there is no attachment, then the more numerous and intense the sudden events, the greater the benefit. When wind arises in a forest fire, it becomes a helper of the fire.

That person with attachment, when happy, is controlled by clinging, and various non-virtuous actions arise. When suffering, they become disheartened and lose faith in practicing the Dharma. Even with just one day of illness, hundreds of doubts and thoughts arise. Even for a mere bushel of grain, they engage in various deceptions and tricks. Even with just one day of happiness, nine kinds of non-virtuous things arise in their mind. Even for the slightest pleasure and pain, they abandon practice and correct view. Once you understand the path of non-attachment, even if misfortune blazes like fire, your practice and realization will increase like a summer sea. This mind of appearing pleasure and pain, other than being just an appearance, is free from the three—arising, ceasing, and abiding. The past and the future are like a rabbit's horn, completely non-existent. Even the present is unfindable, so other than delusion, there is no meaning in reality. Thus, you should examine with wisdom. Do not just stop at examining, but rest equally in that natural state. By knowing your own nature, cut off the root of clinging. That mind of appearing pleasure and pain, purify it by clarifying it as the path of the deity's form, generate compassion for all beings, and meditate on whatever appears as Avalokiteśvara. Recite the six-syllable mantra: Oṃ Maṇi Padme Hūṃ (ཨོཾ་མ་ཎི་པདྨེ་ཧཱུྃ,oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ,嗡 玛尼 贝美 吽, 嗡 玛尼 贝美 吽). Emptiness, deity's form, and compassion—these three are the introduction to the path of the three kāyas. This teaching that naturally gathers is the treasure of practice for the solitary practitioner. This was spoken by Tāranātha at Gongkar (present-day Gonggar County, Shannan, Tibet) at the urging of the solitary practitioner, the learned Sbyin pa rin chen, and Dpal 'byor rnam rgyal. May virtue and goodness increase! The instruction of the learned Sbyin pa rin chen and Dpal 'byor rnam rgyal.
