3) Transforming Adversity into the Path to Enlightenment. 3) Transforming Adversity into the Path to Enlightenment. Third, transforming adversity into the path to enlightenment, as it is said, "When the vessel and its contents are filled with sin, transform adversity into the path to enlightenment." As it is said, when adversity strikes, it must be transformed into the path to enlightenment. Therefore, it must be practiced from now on. There are three ways to do this: relying on conventional bodhicitta, relying on ultimate bodhicitta, and relying on special practices. Relying on Conventional Bodhicitta. The first is: "All blame lies with me alone, contemplate all as being of great kindness." Therefore, when others harm you, your body suffers from illness, your mind feels pain, your village declines, your friends deceive you, or anything undesirable happens, do not harbor resentment, thinking that this is the harm caused by others, and do not think of retaliating against others. Instead, reflect on yourself: "This is because my self-grasping has accumulated evil deeds, I have brought suffering upon myself. I should abandon this self-grasping." Repeatedly contemplate: "These harm-doers are the benefactors who purify my sins and obscurations, therefore they are very kind." Relying on Ultimate Bodhicitta. The second is: "View illusory appearances as the four kayas, guarding emptiness is supreme." That is to say, for all appearances in general, and for any unfortunate events that occur, think like this: "These appearances have no component of being truly established." No matter which of the three aspects of arising, ceasing, and abiding you examine, you should recognize that its nature is free from all grasping. Therefore, in that mere appearance, rest in non-conceptualization that is nothing at all. That is, emptiness is the Dharmakaya, clarity is the Nirmanakaya, union is the Sambhogakaya, and the indivisible is the Svabhavikakaya. Relying on Special Practices. The third is: "The fourfold practice is the supreme method, apply whatever you encounter to meditation." The fourfold practice here is: the practice of accumulating merit, the practice of confessing sins, the practice of giving torma to gods and demons, and the practice of offering torma to dakinis and dharma protectors. Meditate in this way: "I do not want suffering and I want happiness, but things go against my wishes. This implies that I should accumulate merit and purify sins." Therefore, think: "Now I must do this." Then perform the seven-branch offering, etc.

Especially, make extensive offerings and praises to the Three Jewels. Vigorously confess and restrain sins. In all intervals, offer material possessions to the Lama and the Sangha. Constructing statues, temples, scriptures, etc., should become the sole cause of virtue. For the purpose of confessing sins, recite sutras, chant dharanis, make tsa-tsas, and diligently perform prostrations and circumambulations. Offer tormas specifically to those who cause harm, thinking: "You have come to repay my debts from the past. It is extremely kind of you to take on debts. Please continue to destroy me now!" May all the suffering and unpleasantness of all sentient beings, diseases, disasters, and fears, all be piled upon me. May all sentient beings be free from suffering. Even when offering tormas to Dharma protectors, do not pray for happiness in this life. Whether I am sick or well, please bless me to be sick. Whether I die or live, please bless me to die. Whether I recover, please bless me to recover. Like this, make prayers that cut off hope and fear. Whatever you do, think that everything is done for the benefit of sentient beings. For all the good deeds you do, such as virtuous actions, think: "May all sentient beings enter into Dharma activities that are even more excellent than this." If you have to engage in bad deeds involuntarily, or if bad thoughts arise, then from the depths of your heart, think: "May all the bad deeds and bad thoughts of all sentient beings be gathered into this (bad deed and bad thought) of mine." Even ordinary activities such as eating, sleeping, and walking should be done with the single mind of benefiting others. 3) Transforming Adverse Circumstances into the Path to Enlightenment.
