1) Teaching on the Preliminary Practice of Reliance. 1) Teaching on the Preliminary Practice of Reliance. Firstly: As it is said, "First, one should learn the preliminaries." Visualize the root guru on your crown, and contemplate that he is the essence of all lineages. With devotion and longing, pray to the true and complete guru, the great spiritual friend of all, to bless me. Pray that loving-kindness, compassion, and the exceptional mind of enlightenment may arise in my being. Repeat this prayer again and again. The guru then enters from your crown and resides in the heart, in a tent of light like an eggshell facing upwards. Generate devotion and longing. This is guru yoga. Whatever object of meditation you practice below, this must be done before the session. The actual objects of preliminary practice are: the difficulty of finding leisure and opportunity, impermanence of death, the faults of samsara, and contemplation of karma and its results. If it is a new instruction, then as in the Lamrim teachings, with many categories of objects of meditation, analyze in detail and cause them to arise in the being again and again. Afterwards, if you have mastered samadhi, then again in the manner of a slight reminder, condense all of that into one object of meditation. Repeatedly contemplate that having now obtained this rare and precious human body, one must definitely practice the Dharma. Since there is no certainty when death will come, practice the Dharma right now. At the time of death, food, wealth, enjoyment, enemies, friends, home, body, power, etc., none will follow. There is not even a hair's breadth of benefit. Let go of all the appearances of this life, whatever good or bad may come. There is no need to cling to anything. Good and evil alone will surely follow. There is no power to abandon the sins already committed. There is nothing to take with you of the virtues you have not practiced. Due to the power of karma, wherever one is born in the six realms, there is no happiness except suffering. What will you do if you are born in the three lower realms? There is no certainty that you will not be born there. Now, even if it costs your life, do not commit sins. Train again and again in the thought of diligently striving for virtue. At the end of the session, perform the seven-branch prayer as much as possible. In between sessions, apply the meaning of the object of meditation to practice. It is crucial to put this into practice at all times. 1) Preliminary Practice of Reliance
