The accumulation of merit. The accumulation of merit. What is the accumulation of merit? The glorious protector Maitreya said: Generosity and discipline are the accumulation of merit, and wisdom is the accumulation of wisdom. Patience, diligence, and meditation are mentioned in both accumulations. If it is held by the view of the three wheels being empty, then the first five perfections other than wisdom are also said to be the accumulation of wisdom. In the Sutra and the Ornament of Sutras, it is said: The first three perfections are the training of discipline, meditation is the training of samadhi, and wisdom is the training of wisdom, and diligence is universally practiced. Similarly, the first three perfections are the accumulation of merit, wisdom is the accumulation of wisdom, and diligence and meditation are universally practiced. Similarly, the first three perfections are for the benefit of others, and the latter three are the antidotes to afflictions. The reason for establishing the six perfections in order is that the former is the basis of the latter, the former is coarse and the latter is subtle, and the former is inferior and the latter is superior. This is what is said in the Sutra and the Ornament of Sutras. Furthermore, is it not said that there are ten perfections? How are the latter four included in the six perfections? The Sutra says: The perfection of skillful means is held by generosity, discipline, and patience as companions. The perfection of aspiration is held by diligence, the perfection of power by meditation, and the perfection of wisdom by wisdom, in the manner of companions. The noble Nagarjuna also said: Discipline and generosity are for the benefit of others, diligence and patience are for self-benefit, meditation and wisdom are the cause of liberation, and the essence of the Great Vehicle is contained herein. Therefore, these two accumulations are the cause of attaining Buddhahood. Therefore, in short, merit and wisdom should always be cultivated. Some say that Buddhahood can be attained only by the accumulation of merit, and some say that Buddhahood can be attained only by the accumulation of wisdom, but the above-mentioned scriptures have refuted this. In particular, the noble Asanga, who attained the third bhumi, said: Therefore, both of these are unsurpassed and perfect.

It is the main factor for attaining perfect enlightenment, merit is the main thing and wisdom is unsurpassed. From these two accumulations of merit and wisdom, if even one is incomplete, that bodhisattva will not manifest perfect Buddhahood. Thus it is said, therefore, please do not divide the two accumulations, but practice them in the union way. The accumulation of merit.
