Doronatha's Teachings JT353: Commentary on a Single Verse. Commentary on a Single Verse. Commentary on a Single Verse. Oṃ Svasti. Homage to the Buddha! This sūtra of a single verse: In the past, the Victorious One, the perfectly complete Buddha named Star King, having entered into the fire element samādhi, remained in that state of concentration. Our teacher, who became known as the Brahmin Giver, developed supreme faith. Standing with only one foot planted on the ground, he praised with this single verse for seven uninterrupted days. Thus, he perfected the pāramitā of diligence. It is said that the Teacher himself repeated this story again. The term "supreme being" refers to the assembly of ordinary beings and noble beings. Because he is the chief, the guide, and the pathfinder for them, he is supreme, that is, the perfectly complete Buddha. As for "like you," there is no need to mention anyone superior to you, for there is no one else even equal to you. As for "other great ascetics," an ascetic is one who has renounced the world. If there is no ascetic equal to you, what need is there to speak of a householder equal to you? This is the point being made. Thus, the gods such as the Powerful One and Vishnu, the ascetics such as the Samkhya, and the Brahmins such as the Extensive Conduct school—those who are powerful, influential, and renowned as great beings, those who are worthy of offering by worldly people—because they rely on wrong views and bad conduct, they are not even equal to the śrāvakas of the Buddha, let alone comparable to the Buddha himself. This is the meaning. Or, one might wonder, are there no other tathāgatas residing? In the ultimate sense, because all tathāgatas are of one essence, they do not become different others. In terms of how they appear to ordinary worldly people, the Buddhas of the past were not seen at that time, and when they appear in common with those who have impure eyes of wisdom, in one world realm, the tathāgatas

Saying that two supreme incarnations do not appear at the same time is a matter of expediency. It is not like the view of many Śrāvakayāna schools, which hold that two Buddhas do not appear simultaneously in different realms. Even according to the view of the eighteen schools, the Dharmakāya of the Buddhas is the same, and because their intentions are focused on one goal, they are not included among other śramaṇas. "The land of the gods" refers to the places where the Four Great Kings and the Thirty-three Gods reside, who rely on land such as Mount Meru. Because Mahābrahmā lives near Indra, it is said to dispel doubts about whether they live in the Thirty-three Heavens. "In this world" refers to the human world of Jambudvīpa, which is where the most powerful śramaṇas and Brahmins with extraordinary abilities practice special merits. The abode of Vaiśravaṇa is Kuśinagara, and it is specifically mentioned because alchemists, accomplices of substances, and great mantra holders reside there, which also implies the other three world guardians. The so-called supreme abode of the gods refers to the palaces that depend on the land, such as the moon and the sun, and move in the sky, as well as all the heavenly abodes up to the Anāgāmin heavens, which exist like clouds in the sky. The reason for mentioning the sun, moon, stars, etc., is because it is said in the world that they control the good and bad of the year, the occurrence and elimination of diseases, and the happiness and suffering of humans and animals. The reason for mentioning the Anāgāmin heavens, etc., is because the greatest gods reside there. The so-called directions and intermediate directions refer to the four directions of Mount Meru, the abodes of the Four Great Kings, and the intermediate directions of the summit, where there are fortresses where Vajrapāṇi Yakshas reside. Or it refers to the islands of the directions and borders, that is, the twelve islands. Or in another way, it refers to the abodes of the eight guardians of the directions, such as Indra and Agni, in the surrounding environment, relying on the surrounding mountains. It is said that they control the rise and fall of the world, as well as the Gandharvas and sages.

Etc., powerful ones reside, and it is mentioned here because of the monks and Brahmins arising from their lineages relying on them. Mountain means the main peaks of mountains such as Yoke-Holder Mountain, and small mountains such as Gangtise and Mandara. Forest means seven or twelve great forests, etc. It is mentioned because ascetics travel and reside in mountains and forests, which means the land expands, meaning the land is vast. The meaning of the other words is that it is more excellent than the desire realm, and it is said that even the heavenly realm does not have it, thus showing that it is more excellent than all actions in the three realms. This is also another way of saying the meaning sutra, the meaning of this sutra is according to what the noble Vasubandhu said, but it is said by Tāranātha to be easily understood. Auspicious!
