Collection of Teachings by Tāranātha, JT63: Advice to Retreatant Kunga Palden. Advice to Retreatant Kunga Palden by Tāranātha. Oṃ Svasti! I pray to the lama who is the embodiment of the four kāyas with unwavering faith. May these three words of crucial advice resonate with the student's mind! Having obtained this human body once, do you really have time to live leisurely? Instead of spending your life in distraction, strive to tame your own mind! If you do not whip yourself with the whip of diligence, give up hope of being urged by others. Look at the people of your village, your enemies, and your friends. Do not seek other exhortations for virtuous deeds. When you encounter profound Dharma teachings, strive to gain the profit of practice. Like the profit from exchanging goods, draw the essence from the depths of the great meditators. If you do not cut the bonds of sensual pleasures, you will attract thousands of sufferings by giving up hundreds. You spend your life in deceptive thoughts, bearing the name of a hermit is truly shameful! Life is uncertain, and death is unpredictable. Instead of showing off in meditation and practice, you run after fame and gain. There is a danger of being carried away by the winds of the eight worldly concerns. A virtuous deed that benefits your own mind, even if others do not understand it, is still worthwhile. Do not desire a large entourage or fame. Minor experiences are in danger of disappearing. Even if the sun of realization dawns, if people near, far, and in between do not understand, you will feel ashamed from the bottom of your heart. This is how meditation practice does not become essential. No matter who you benefit, whether they are enemies or friends, unless your mind is moistened with compassion, even if you do not frown for a moment, the seeds of enlightenment will not be sown. In general, all obstacles arise from what is manifest. Practicing in secret is very important. Even if you benefit the people of an entire country, if you are carried away by jealousy, it is not true altruism. You may spend your life in practice, but if you are carried away by pride, 1-712 you will fall into a cliff. When experiences and qualities arise, if you boast to others, they will immediately diminish. When benefiting beings and fame arise, there is a great danger that demons will enter and cause obstacles. The demon is not somewhere else; being distracted from Dharma practice is the demon itself. No matter how important the companions you associate with are, what they do is still worldly affairs.

Sa! Having vowed to dedicate this life, one should not seek worldly connections. Enjoyment and retinues are the source of distraction, so there is no need to deliberately pursue them. So-called freedom is the basis of bondage, so do not cling to it out of stinginess. Meaningless idle talk is the enemy of spiritual practice, so it is crucial to remain silent and keep your mouth shut. Wandering around villages is the reason why cows get lost, so it is courageous to stay in a quiet place. Now, the essence of practice is to cultivate unwavering devotion. There are three aspects of practice: contemplate impermanence, suffering, and karma. There are two foundations of practice: unfeigned sincerity and great compassion. Urge yourself on with the impermanence of death, and if you contemplate suffering, you will abandon attachment. If you contemplate karma, you will purify your actions. Compassion and non-conceptual emptiness are the core of meditation. And the root of all this is devotion. Pacify arrogance and competitiveness in the realm of reality. If you can cut off the entanglement of delusion, your practice will hit the mark. In short, if you want to practice Dharma, do it according to the Dharma. Practicing Dharma in a way that wastes this life, whether it is study, contemplation, or meditation, is just deceiving yourself. It is useless to only know a little bit of Dharma, because your mind still remains in an ordinary state. If you do not have the key points of practice, even foolish meditation will lose the true meaning. If renunciation is not born from the depths of your heart, then so-called retreat is just accumulating dung in the mountains. For those who are careless and do not value karma, hoping to attain accomplishment is like planting the seeds of hell. For those who do not have loving-kindness and bodhicitta, their words of emptiness are just self-deceiving empty talk. If you fail to integrate the inner winds into wisdom, then the so-called practice of channels and winds is just a heretical path. Spreading the vows of tantra in the marketplace, turning yogis who should have renounced the world into outcasts. Also, those who hold good views and conduct are in danger of accumulating sins by belittling others. Even if you strive diligently in practice day and night, you must be vigilant about these pitfalls. You should wholeheartedly focus on the Dharma, tame your mind, maintain good conduct, and be mindful at all times. In this way, the fruits you desire will eventually manifest. These words were the teachings of Tāranātha to the hermit Kunga Pelden.
