Another Instruction Homage to all the Lamas! The essence of practice condensed is: Conventional great compassion, And ultimate freedom from elaboration. Taking pure appearance as the path of deity form, Is the practice of the mantra's heart essence. Even if a sudden event of happiness or suffering occurs, What deeper practice is there Than taking whatever arises as the path? By the magical power of King Rabsel, Seeing this key point, He instructed his heart-son, Jampa'i Pal. When you yourself are happy and content, All beings who have been your mothers Also only desire to be happy. Your own happiness alone is not beneficial, But wishing that all these may attain happiness, Please repeatedly think this in your mind. When happy, dedicate the happiness to the assembly, May benefit and happiness fill the sky. These words should be repeatedly recited. If you want to attain happiness, You must strive in virtuous actions, Thinking, 'I must strive in virtue,' And wishing that all beings of the three realms May abide in virtue, Please repeatedly send forth this aspiration. The method of engaging oneself and others in virtue, Striving diligently is very important. Happiness is the conventional path. When unwanted suffering occurs, Meditate on compassion for those who suffer, And avert the path of sinful actions. When happy, take loving-kindness as the path, And when suffering, take compassion as the path. The appearance of happiness and suffering Is merely a delusion, And does not exist in the true meaning. The body is like a stiff corpse, And no matter how much you enjoy desirable objects, It will not experience happiness, And even if chopped into pieces or burned by fire, It will not have any suffering. If there is no body, then the mind Cannot be pointed out and is unobstructed, Therefore, there is no happiness or suffering related to objects. Since there is nothing other than the body and mind That experiences suffering, The agent and object of happiness are delusions, And the agent and object of suffering do not exist. Rest in the state of non-existence. Although the appearance of happiness and suffering does not cease, You should avert attachment to it. If there is no attachment, then sudden events, No matter how many, become even more powerful. When wind arises to a forest fire, It becomes a helper of the fire. A person with attachment Will cling to happiness.

When power becomes excessive, various non-dharmic behaviors arise. When suffering, the mind becomes disheartened and restless, losing faith in practicing the Dharma. Even if sick for just one day, hundreds of doubts and delusions arise. Even when facing a bushel of barley, various deceptions and tricks are employed. Even when one day of happiness arrives, nine kinds of non-dharmic things stir in the mind. Even when facing minor joys and sorrows, practice and decisiveness are abandoned. Once one understands the practice of non-attachment, even if bad circumstances blaze like fire, realization increases like a summer lake. This mind that experiences joy and sorrow is nothing more than an appearance, devoid of arising, ceasing, and abiding. The past and the future are like rabbit horns, completely non-existent. Even the present is indeterminate, having no meaning other than illusion. Therefore, one should examine with wisdom. Do not merely remain in examination, but rest equally in the natural state of self. By knowing one's own nature, hold onto {anger [ignorance]}. This mind that experiences joy and sorrow, purify it by visualizing it as the deity's body, have compassion for all beings, and contemplate all appearances as Avalokiteśvara. Recite the six-syllable mantra (Tibetan: ཡི་གེ་དྲུག་པའི་གསང་སྔགས་, Sanskrit Devanagari: षडक्षरीमन्त्र, Sanskrit Romanization: ṣaḍakṣarīmantra, Literal Chinese meaning: Six-Character Mantra). Emptiness, the deity's body, and compassion are the introduction to the practice of the three kayas. This pith instruction that gathers naturally is a treasure for solitary practitioners. It is said that this was spoken by Tāranātha at Gongkar (near Gongkar Chode Monastery in Shannan, Tibet) at the urging of the solitary practitioner, the learned Giver Jewel and Auspicious Victor. May virtue and goodness increase! Table of Contents Another instruction.
