Collection of Teachings by Master Tāranātha JT10: The Quintessence of the Sutra and Tantra Paths, Instructions on the Three—View, Meditation, and Action. The Quintessence of the Sutra and Tantra Paths, Instructions on the Three—View, Meditation, and Action. The Quintessence of the Sutra and Tantra Paths, Instructions on the Three—View, Meditation, and Action. Namo Guru. In the pure sky of the Dharmakāya of Great Bliss, all appearances of the three realms arise. The primordial wisdom of union manifests. To the supreme Lama, I bow with all things. To explain the means of realizing the inexpressible, self-aware ultimate truth, I speak here at the urging of faithful students. Although the definitive meaning is not within the realm of words, one can realize the ultimate truth through symbols. To establish the nature of reality, realize the certain secret of the unerring view. To experience it as it is, the key to practicing meditation must be unerring. To ensure that cause and effect, interdependence, are not deceptive, it is essential to purify one's conduct in practice. When the nature of the ground is manifested as it is, the key to manifesting the result is the inseparability of cause and effect. The nature is unchanging, free from elaboration, co-emergent, self-aware, self-luminous, all-pervasive, boundless, and inexpressible. These are the seven key points of the view of reality that must be understood. No matter how the world and existence arise and cease, the sky has no width or narrowness and does not change. In all of samsara and nirvana, happiness and suffering, high and low, the nature of mind has no good or bad shifts. Since anything appears, it is not nothing. Since the nature is free from grasping, it is not existent. In the nature that is originally nothing, it is free from all elaborations established by the mind. This nature of reality, the nature of mind, is not newly created but co-emergent from the beginning. The three times—past, future, and present—are merely terms, and their nature is not different. It is not nothing; awareness and emptiness are uninterrupted. It is clear but without grasping and free from reliance. All appearances of samsara and nirvana constantly arise, and when they arise, they are empty from the beginning. In this mere emptiness of the nature of space, there is no near or far in directions such as east and west. The space of a pillar, the space of a vase—these are just words, and no one can distinguish them. Therefore, the mind pervades everything like space. If you do not practice, you will be confused. 1-596

The very nature of mind, and the mind of a yogi in the stage of the path, The mind of a fully enlightened Buddha who has purified illusions, names are different but the meaning is without difference. Appearing as anything yet not being anything, the single one that is empty and clear, free from conceptualization, But is merely labeled separately by delusion. Since there is nothing to grasp anywhere, it is free from extremes, If you grasp it as real, it is the extreme of permanence, if you grasp it as empty, it is said to be the extreme of annihilation. Since it is not established in anything, it is beyond the mind. Good and bad, things that are existent and nonexistent, compounded, Uncompounded, etc., whatever names and terms are spoken of that appear and are renowned, It does not change the reality of things, and the way of abiding cannot be spoken of as it is, Therefore, it is beyond the path of words and inexpressible. By the blessings of the glorious and supreme lama, It can be experienced by self-awareness alone. The meaning of the various tenets of different schools, Is in harmony with all and superior to all. Others practice only a part of the reality, This alone is the unerring original state. The Hearers meditate on the selflessness of the person, The objects grasped by the Solitary Realizers are all unreal, and the Yogacharas have the wisdom of twofold emptiness, and The Madhyamikas say that all phenomena are unreal. The outer tantras have the form of deities that are appearance and emptiness, and The unsurpassed ones have the indivisibility of bliss and emptiness, all of which are names for one's own mind alone, It is the settling of one's own mind alone. Because it is free from all actions and agents, What is called the selflessness of the person is this very mind. All appearances of objects are the play of the mind itself, Therefore, what is grasped is the selflessness of phenomena. Just as a wave is not different from water, All appearances are the play of one's own mind alone, therefore there is no difference between the grasper and the grasped. This self-nature, clear and empty, without interruption, is the non-dual wisdom, the ultimate reality. Without support and without object, And because it is ungraspable and beyond the realm of expression, it is the nature of reality that has never existed. The appearance of all of samsara and nirvana, and since it is empty as soon as it appears, it is clear and empty. Impermanence, suffering, etc. are merely terms, But in meaning, the essence is not established like an echo. In the great bliss of unchanging self-nature, There is nothing to grasp.
