English version Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva's Ten Fast Days On the first day, a young boy descends. Reciting the name of Dīpankara Buddha (定光如来) will prevent one from falling into the hell of knives and spears. Observing the fast will eliminate sins for forty kalpas. On the eighth day, a prince descends. Reciting the name of Bhaiṣajyaguru (药师琉璃光佛) will prevent one from falling into the hell of excrement and filth. Observing the fast will eliminate sins for thirty kalpas. On the fourteenth day, the Examiner of Destinies descends. Reciting the names of the Buddhas of the Bhadrakalpa (贤劫千佛) will prevent one from falling into the hell of boiling cauldrons. Observing the fast will eliminate sins for one thousand kalpas. On the fifteenth day, the Great General of the Five Paths descends. Reciting the name of Amitābha (阿弥陀佛) will prevent one from falling into the hell of cold ice. Observing the fast will eliminate sins for two hundred kalpas. On the eighteenth day, Yamarāja (阎罗王) descends. Reciting the name of Avalokiteśvara (观世音菩萨) will prevent one from falling into the hell of sword trees. Observing the fast will eliminate sins for ninety kalpas. Reciting the name of Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva (地藏菩萨) will prevent one from falling into the hell of chopping and cutting. Observing the fast will eliminate sins for one thousand kalpas. On the twenty-eighth day, Indra (帝释) descends. Reciting the name of Amitābha (阿弥陀佛) will prevent one from falling into the hell of iron saws. Observing the fast will eliminate sins for ninety kalpas. On the twenty-ninth day, the Four Heavenly Kings (四天王) descend. Reciting the name of the Superior Bodhisattva of Medicine will prevent one from falling into the hell of grinding mills. Observing the fast will eliminate sins for seven thousand kalpas. On the thirtieth day, Brahmā (梵天王) descends. Reciting the name of Śākyamuni Buddha (释迦牟尼佛) will prevent one from falling into the hell of ashes and rivers.
