English version 'Mahayana Four Fasting Days' The eighth day of the second month, the eighth day of the fourth month, the eighth day of the fifth month, and the fifteenth day of the seventh month are the Four Fasting Days. There are three long fasting months in a year, namely the first, fifth, and ninth months. The Six Fasting Days are the eighth, fourteenth, fifteenth, twenty-third, twenty-eighth, and thirtieth days of each month. The Ten Fasting Days: On the first day of each month, the Good and Evil Kiao Children (the children who record good and evil deeds) descend to examine; on the fourteenth day, the Examiners of Life (the gods who examine lifespan) and Recorders descend; on the fifteenth day, the Great Generals of the Five Paths (the gods who govern the five paths of reincarnation) descend; on the eighteenth day, King Yama (the king who governs hell) descends; on the twenty-third day, the Great Heavenly General (the great general of heaven) descends; on the twenty-fourth day, Emperor Sakra (Indra) descends; on the twenty-eighth day, Lord Taishan (the god who governs life and death) descends; on the twenty-ninth day, the Four Heavenly Kings (the Four Great Heavenly Kings) descend; on the thirtieth day, the Heavenly Court and Earthly Palace (the heavenly government and the underground government) descend. On the first day, the children descend to examine, reciting Dipamkara Buddha (定光如来佛), one can eliminate the sins of fasting and be spared from the suffering of the sword and spear hell for forty kalpas. On the eighth day, the prince descends to examine, reciting Bhaisajyaguru (药师琉璃光佛), one can eliminate the sins of fasting and be spared from the suffering of the powder grass hell for thirty kalpas. On the fourteenth day, the Examiners of Life descend, reciting the Thousand Buddhas of the Bhadrakalpa (贤劫千佛), one can eliminate the sins of fasting and be spared from the suffering of the cauldron hell for one thousand kalpas. On the fifteenth day, the Great Generals of the Five Paths descend, reciting Amitabha Buddha (阿弥陀佛), one can eliminate the sins of fasting and be spared from the suffering of the ice hell for two hundred kalpas.
