English version The Contemplation Gate of Dhyana Master Bodhidharma of Southern India Question: What is called Dhyana Samadhi (Chan Ding)? Answer: Dhyana (Chan) means that the chaotic mind does not arise, there is no movement, and there is no thought. This is Dhyana Samadhi. Correcting the mind and stopping thoughts, reaching the state of no birth and no death, no going and no coming, being still and unmoving, is called Dhyana Samadhi. Question: What is called Dhyana Contemplation (Chan Guan)? Answer: The mind and spirit being clear and pure is called Dhyana. Clearly understanding the truth is called Contemplation. Dhyana Contemplation can be self-attained without error, so it is called Dhyana Contemplation. The mind and spirit being clear and pure, not arising, not ceasing, not coming, not going, being still and unmoving, is called Dhyana. Question: What is called Dhyana Samadhi (Chan Ding)? Answer: Dhyana Samadhi is a Sanskrit term, here meaning 'a forest of accumulated merits'. All Buddhas in the Three Realms speak of Dhyana meditation, so it is called 'a forest of accumulated merits'. Question: What is called Dhyana Dharma (Chan Fa)? Answer: Dhyana Dharma has a sequence from understanding. When first learning, there are seven gates of contemplation from beginning to end: first, the Gate of Abiding Mind (Zhu Xin Men); second, the Gate of Empty Mind (Kong Xin Men); third, the Gate of No-Appearance (Wu Xiang Men); fourth, the Gate of Mind Liberation (Xin Jie Tuo Men); fifth, the Gate of Dhyana Samadhi (Chan Ding Men); sixth, the Gate of Suchness (Zhen Ru Men); and seventh, the Gate of Wisdom (Zhi Hui Men). The Gate of Abiding Mind means that the mind is scattered and agitated, clinging to external objects and unable to abide. Specially gather and restrain thoughts, causing them to abide and no longer move outward, so it is called the Gate of Abiding Mind. The Gate of Empty Mind means to observe the mind, turning to realize the emptiness of the mind, with no going and no coming, no abiding place, and nothing to rely on, so it is called the Gate of Empty Mind. The Gate of No-Appearance means that the mind is clear and pure, without appearance, not blue, not yellow, not red, not white, not long, not short, not big, not small, not square, not round, being still and unmoving, so it is called the Gate of No-Appearance. The Gate of Mind Liberation means knowing that the mind has no ties and no bonds, and all afflictions do not come to disturb the mind, so it is called the Gate of Mind Liberation. Dhyana Samadhi is a Sanskrit term from the Western Regions, which in Tang language is 'Quiet Contemplation (Jing Lu)'. Realizing the mind is quiet, whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, all is quiet and undisturbed, so it is called quiet. The Gate of Suchness means realizing the mind is no-mind, equal to empty space, pervading the entire Dharma Realm, equal and non-dual, without change. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

English version: Therefore, it is named the Tathata Gate (真如門, the gate of realizing the suchness of reality). The Wisdom Gate means understanding and recognizing all things is called 'Wisdom' (智), and being in accord with and penetrating the source of emptiness is called 'Insight' (慧). Therefore, it is named the Wisdom Gate. It is also named the Ultimate Path, and also named the Mahayana (大乘) No-Form Meditation Gate (無相禪觀門). This is because of cultivating meditation and learning the Buddha's path. There are seven types of contemplation gates in meditation. Loudly reciting the Buddha's name brings ten kinds of merits: first, not hearing evil sounds; second, the mind is not scattered when reciting the Buddha's name; third, eliminating sleepiness; fourth, being courageous and diligent; fifth, the devas (諸天) rejoice; sixth, the demon armies (魔軍) are fearful; seventh, the sound reverberates in the ten directions; eighth, the suffering of the three lower realms (三途) ceases; ninth, samadhi (三昧, meditative absorption) manifests; tenth, being reborn in the Pure Land (淨土). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
