English version: Someone was taking shelter from the rain at a certain place. Later, a *Hu* monk (a monk from the Western Regions) passed by and, upon seeing it, told the villagers: 'This is a *Jingtan* (sutra altar), where sutras appear in the sky. On fasting days, *Huabao* (transformed treasures) will appear. They often manifest.' This *Jingtan* is located thirty *li* (a Chinese unit of distance) northwest of the county seat and still exists today. In the past, Wang Tuo killed countless people in his life. He then resolved to single-mindedly recite the *Vajracchedika Prajnaparamita Sutra* (Diamond Sutra) ten thousand times. When he had recited it five thousand times, he suddenly saw dozens of ghosts coming towards him one day at noon, saying: 'King Yama has a warrant to arrest you. You should stop reciting the sutra for now.' Wang Tuo immediately began to recite, causing the ghosts to come from behind. Furthermore, a ghost messenger arrived on horseback and informed the ghosts, saying: 'King Yama has ordered that the person reciting the sutra should be spared for now.' Thus, Wang Tuo escaped death and lived to the age of ninety-eight before passing away. In the past, Wang Chuo was a judicial officer in Tianshui Prefecture under Xue Ju, who was causing unrest by killing soldiers. When it was Wang Chuo's turn to be beheaded, the knife broke into pieces. Then, the strongman Song Luo was ordered to use a knife to behead him, but the knife also broke into pieces. Xue Ju was surprised and said: 'What magic do you possess?' Wang Chuo replied: 'I have been reciting the *Vajracchedika Prajnaparamita Sutra* (Diamond Sutra) since I was young. It must be the power of the sutra.' Xue Ju then released Wang Chuo. Wang Chuo was afraid and hid in a toilet. While reciting the sutra, a light appeared in the toilet, and the bandits followed the light to the toilet. Upon seeing him, they asked: 'Who is it?' The person in the toilet replied: 'It is Wang Chuo, the one who could not be killed by the knife.' The bandits said: 'You don't need to hide; everyone in the army knows.' They urged him to go home. Thus, he was able to escape this disaster. In the past, there was a man named Zhu Shiheng, who was by nature crude and evil, and did not respect the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha). He served as the Left *Puye* (a high-ranking official title) of the Liang Kingdom. His wife often delighted in doing good deeds and single-mindedly recited the *Vajracchedika Prajnaparamita Sutra* (Diamond Sutra). When Zhu Shiheng was not at home, his wife was reciting the *Vajracchedika Prajnaparamita Sutra* (Diamond Sutra) with great concentration. Zhu Shiheng returned from outside, and upon seeing this, he snatched the sutra scroll from his wife's hand and threw it into the fire. When the fire went out, the sutra was not damaged. Thereupon, the husband and wife together collected the sutra scroll and repented before the Buddha. In the past, Cui Shanchong served as a judge in Xie Prefecture. He encountered a rebellion, and the prefect was killed. Cui Shanchong led more than twenty men, carrying bows and swords, and fled to Kunming City. At night, they did not know where to go. Cui Shanchong told the soldiers: 'Sincerely recite the name of the Buddha.' Cui Shanchong himself recited the *Vajracchedika Prajnaparamita Sutra* (Diamond Sutra). He let the horse walk as it pleased, and suddenly saw a torch leading the way in front. After walking several *li* (a Chinese unit of distance), the fire went out, and there was no light. English version: In the past, Tang Yan was a petty official in Qi County, Zizhou. He often recited the 'Diamond Sutra' (Vajra Sutra). Because he was careless in his work, he was escorted by officials to Suizhou, and the county sent people to arrest him. Tang Yan heard a voice in the air saying, 'Tang Yan, hurry away!' Tang Yan looked up and saw a foreign monk (a monk from the Western Regions). Tang Yan immediately leaned against a tree and sincerely recited the sutra. Dozens of pursuers were face to face but could not see him, and he escaped this difficulty. Wei Xu was a man from Qin. He often recited the 'Diamond Sutra'. The messengers of the underworld tried to capture him three times but failed. King Yama (Yama) ordered the messengers to report, 'Let him go for now.' Li Yan was a man from Nanyang Prefecture. He served as the county lieutenant of Dezhou. He recited the 'Diamond Sutra' throughout his life. Every time he recited the sutra, divine light appeared. In the past, Madam Dou suffered from a headache at night. She asked a maid to fetch fire from the kitchen, but the maid said there was no fire. Suddenly, she saw a torch in front of the steps. She went up the steps, and it was as bright as day. The madam's headache was immediately cured. Everyone diligently recited the sutra. These are all due to the power of constantly reciting the 'Diamond Sutra'! There are many more instances of those who recited the 'Diamond Sutra' receiving miraculous responses. Due to the length, they will not be recorded one by one. Based on the above examples, if someone were to use the seven treasures (seven treasures) filling the three thousand great thousand worlds (three thousand great thousand worlds) for almsgiving, it would not be as meritorious as spreading this sutra. If someone writes the 'Diamond Sutra', upholds, recites, and also has others write and spread it, it is like lighting one lamp, and hundreds of thousands of lamps can illuminate the darkness, never extinguishing. If one can copy this sutra and post it on the walls of a temple, the merit is immeasurable, boundless, and inconceivable. Emperor Kaiyuan (Emperor Kaiyuan) praises the merit of the 'Diamond Sutra': One scroll of the 'Diamond Sutra' is as heavy as Mount Sumeru (Mount Sumeru), so my emperor especially upholds it. All eighty-four thousand Dharma gates can be understood, and the wisdom eye can foresee the thoughts of others. The songs talked about recently are all old tunes, listen to the wonderful words of the 'Vajra Prajna Sutra' (Vajra Prajna Sutra). Emperor Kaiyuan personally annotated it, sincerely prostrate and pay homage, do not have doubts. This sutra can remove all suffering, and those who make the aspiration will know in advance with the heavenly eye. Do not be led astray by the six thieves of ignorance (six thieves of ignorance), be muddled and confused, clinging to foolishness all day long. The World-Honored One (World-Honored One) entered Nirvana (Nirvana) countless kalpas (kalpa) ago, past hundreds of billions of asamkhyas (asamkhya).
