English version The east wall of the inner hall of the Buddhist temple depicts the 'Vimalakirti Transformation'. Sariputra (one of the ten major disciples of the Buddha, known for his wisdom) appears embarrassed and shifts his knees. At the end of the Yuanhe period (806-820), the popular lecturer monk Wen Shu embellished it, but the brushstrokes have almost completely disappeared. The standard layout of a temple places the bell tower on the east side. However, this temple is unique because Li Linfu's (a chancellor during the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang) residence was located to the east, so the bell tower was built on the west side. Inside the temple, there is Guo Ling's (referring to Guo Ziyi, a famous general of the Tang Dynasty) tortoiseshell whip and Lady Wang, Guo Ling's wife's, seven-treasure tent. The temple abbot Yuan Jing was knowledgeable about Buddhist stories. He said that Li Youzuo (referring to Li Linfu) would often invite the monks of this temple to his residence to hold a vegetarian feast on his birthday. A monk named Yi (Seng Yi) once praised the Buddha and donated a saddle, which sold for 70,000 coins. Another monk named Guang (Seng Guang) was quite famous. When it was his turn to praise the Buddha, he praised Li Youzuo's merits to the extreme, hoping to receive a generous reward. After the feast, a colorful bamboo box was brought out from behind the curtain, containing a fragrant silk handkerchief and an object like a rotten nail, several inches long. The monk felt disappointed and ashamed upon returning. After a few days, he thought that the minister should not deceive him, so he took the object to the West Market (commercial area of Chang'an) to show it to a foreign merchant. The merchant was surprised to see it and said, 'Where did you get this object, monk? If you must sell it, I will not lower the price.' The monk tried to ask for 100,000 coins. The merchant laughed and said, 'Not enough.' The monk described the object even more vigorously, raising the price to 500,000 coins. The merchant said, 'This is worth 10 million.' So he gave him the money. The monk asked the name of the object, and the merchant said, 'This is a precious bone.' There was previously a monk in the temple who would not reveal his name. He often carried a bundle of straw and sat or lay down in the temple's corridors, refusing to live in the monks' quarters. After several years, the temple's manager (temple administrator) advised him to move into the quarters. He said, 'Do you dislike me?' That night, he burned himself with the bundle of straw. By the next morning, only ashes remained, without the foul smell of blood and flesh. Only then did the people know that he was an extraordinary person, so they sculpted his image from the ashes, which is now in the Buddhist hall. People call him the Straw Bundle Master (Shu Cao Shi). Guangzhifang (name of a ward in Chang'an, Tang Dynasty)'s Guangzhisi Temple, Puxian Hall was originally Empress Tianhou's (referring to Wu Zetian) dressing room. When the grapes ripened, Wu Zetian would come here. Now, Yuchi's (referring to Yuchi Yiseng, a painter of the Tang Dynasty) paintings in the hall are quite wonderful. The paintings on the four walls and the peeling white bones show ingenious and dangerous craftsmanship. There are also three transformed demon women, whose bodies seem to be coming out of the walls. The Buddha's halo has uniform colors, staggered and well-arranged, making people feel dizzy. The brocade in front of the Buddha's seat on the east wall is like a broken ancient road sign. The brocade on the west wall is also dilapidated. Xuanyangfang (name of a ward in Chang'an, Tang Dynasty)'s Jingyusi Temple was originally the residence of Empress Taimu (Empress of Emperor Gaozu of Tang Dynasty, Li Yuan). The monks in the temple said that outside the gate of Sanjieyuan, is where Emperor Shenyao (referring to Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, Li Longji) shot peacocks. The coiled snakes above are blackened by smoke and look frightening. The trees and rocks in the east corridor are dangerous and strange, and the eminent monks also...

English version: Strange. Chongji Temple in Zhaoguo Ward (location in modern China unspecified): Behind the temple, there are the dragon-patterned robe and six embroidered garments woven by the Tianhou (Buddhist deity). The second courtyard from the south in Dongkuo has the Kashaya Hall and Manshu Hall, where Vinaya Master Xuan made kasayas (Buddhist robes). There are several pine trees, which are very peculiar. Zisheng Temple in Chongsheng Ward (location in modern China unspecified): Outside the Pure Land Courtyard gate, it is said that Wu Daozi (Tang Dynasty painter) once painted while drunk, holding a candle one night. In the painting, there was a place where he pointed with a halberd, which looked very fierce. Inside the courtyard gate, Lu Lengjia (Tang Dynasty painter) often studied Wu Daozi's style, and Wu Daozi also taught him some painting secrets. Lu Lengjia once painted the three gates of Zongchi Temple (location in modern China unspecified), and when he had completed half of it, Wu Daozi greatly admired him, saying to people, 'Lu Lengjia has not obtained the essence of my painting, and he is only thinking too hard. How long can he persist?' Lu Lengjia died after finishing this painting. Ci'en Temple (located in modern Xi'an, Shaanxi): Because the temple was unclean, the Sangharama (monastery) was built accordingly. There are more than ten courtyards in total, with one thousand eight hundred and ninety-seven rooms. The imperial court ordered the ordination of three hundred monks. Initially, when Xuanzang (Tang Dynasty monk) returned from the Western Regions (ancient term referring to areas in modern western China and Central Asia), Emperor Taizong of Tang (Li Shimin, 626-649) ordered Li Daozong, the Duke of Jiangxia and Grand Master of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices, to set up the Nine-Part Music to welcome the scriptures and Buddha statues into the temple. There were more than a thousand decorated carts in total, and the Emperor watched from Anfu Gate. Emperor Taizong often bestowed upon Xuanzang coarse cloth robes worth more than a hundred gold pieces, and the craftsmanship showed no traces of needlework. The persimmon tree and white peony in the temple were planted by Dharma Power Superior Man himself. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
