English version Hymn to the Three Bodies of Buddha (Composed by Sages of the Western Land) Translated by Tripitaka Master Fa Xian, Great Master of Mingjiao, Minister of the Bureau of Merit Evaluation with the title Chao San Da Fu, by Imperial Decree Dharmakāya (法身) I now bow to the Dharmakāya Buddha (Dharmakāya Buddha, the body of the Buddha that embodies the Dharma itself), whose universal wisdom is beyond comparison and difficult to conceive. Filling the Dharma realm without hindrance, serene and still, without equal. Neither existent nor non-existent, its nature is true, also neither much nor little, beyond quantity. Equal and without form, like empty space, its blessings to self and others are also thus. Saṃbhogakāya (报身) I now bow to the Saṃbhogakāya Buddha (Saṃbhogakāya Buddha, the body of the Buddha attained through practice), serenely abiding, the Great Sage (Mahāmuni, referring to the Buddha). Compassionately transforming and guiding the assembly of Bodhisattvas (Bodhisattva, one who practices to save sentient beings), illuminating the gathering like the sun. Accumulating all merits over three kalpas (asaṃkhyeya kalpa, extremely long units of time), one can then perfect the path of stillness. With a great voice, speaking the wonderful Dharma, universally enabling the attainment of equal fruit. Nirmāṇakāya (化身) I now bow to the Nirmāṇakāya Buddha (Nirmāṇakāya Buddha, the body of the Buddha manifested to save sentient beings), attaining perfect enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. Sometimes arising in transformations, sometimes in stillness, sometimes going forth to transform in the ten directions. Sometimes turning the Wheel of Dharma (Dharmacakra, the teachings of the Buddha) in the Deer Park (Mrigadava, the place where the Buddha first taught), sometimes manifesting great light like a heap of fire. The suffering retribution of the three evil paths (traya gati, the three evil realms: hell, hungry ghosts, and animals) can all be removed, the Great Sage (Mahāmuni) without compare in the three realms (trayo dhātu, the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm). Dedication Such is the Buddha's body of unconditioned wisdom, I constantly believe in and understand, purifying the three karmas. With immeasurable wisdom and great meritorious deeds, with one mind, I compassionately care for all sentient beings. With this hymn praising the three bodies of the Buddha, the seeds of unconditioned merit that are obtained, May I quickly attain Buddhahood (Bodhi, enlightenment), and completely lead all beings to the right path.
