At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti, with a gathering of one thousand two hundred and fifty great Bhikshus and ten thousand Bodhisattvas. At that time, passing through a hundred thousand million kuli (a unit of measurement) of Buddha-lands from this Buddha-land, beyond those Buddha-lands, there was a world named Ananda Kusan (translated in Jin as 'Flower Accumulation'). The Buddha there was named Ekapatiroya (translated in Jin as 'Supreme Heavenly King'), the Tathagata, the Truly Enlightened One, the Perfectly Awakened One. He has now sent two Bodhisattvas. One is named Amitabha Dharma (translated in Jin as 'Immeasurable Light'), and the other is named Mahadharma (translated in Jin as 'Great Light'). At that time, the two Bodhisattvas came to the Buddha's place, first bowing their heads to the Buddha's feet, kneeling with their palms together, and said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, passing through a hundred thousand million kuli of Buddha-lands from here, there is a world named Flower Accumulation. The Buddha there is named Supreme Heavenly King, the Tathagata, the Truly Enlightened One, the Perfectly Awakened One. He has now sent us to inquire after the World Honored One, asking if the Dharma is being taught peacefully, if those who receive the Dharma are progressing, and if there are no other obstacles. Whether they are not harassed by Devas, Nagas, Yakshas, ghosts, or Pisachas (a type of demon), Kumbhandas (pot-shaped demons), Rakshasas (flesh-eating demons), or tigers, wolves, humans, or non-humans. That World Honored One, the Tathagata, the Truly Enlightened One, the Perfectly Awakened One, has now sent us to hold the Dharani-pata (a collection of mantras), for the sake of all beings, hoping that they may be peaceful, gain widespread fame, have handsome appearances, have energy, have strong muscles, and be strong.' Jali, Mahajali, Jalani, Ukki Mukhe, Sampati, Mahasampati. At this time, the Buddha said to Ananda: 'You receive this Dharani-pata, uphold it, recite it, and read it. Ananda, this Dharani-pata (Dharani name) was spoken by seventy-seven billion Buddhas. If anyone harms the one who recites it, it is as if saying that the words of these Buddhas are false. Ajita Bodhisattva (Ajita Bodhisattva), also known as Maitreya (Maitreya), said to the wise Ananda (Ananda): 'I should also repeat the Dharani-pata (Dharani-pata). Why? It is also to bring peace to all beings, to have fame and virtue spread far and wide, to have a dignified appearance, to be full of strength, and to have strong bones and muscles.' 'E ba, Ba ba, Mie zhi cha li, Le zhi, Luo lan mi, Lou lan mi, Xi li, Mi li, Ti li' At this time, the Buddha told Ananda (Ananda): 'Receive this Dharani-pata (Dharani-pata), uphold and recite it. If good men and good women receive this Dharani-pata (Dharani-pata), uphold and recite it, they will know the past lives of fourteen existences. If good men and good women uphold the Dharani-pata (Dharani-pata), recite and speak it, they will never be disturbed by all ghosts, spirits, humans, and non-humans. Snakes, small snakes (yuan), vipers (fu), and insects containing poison will be unable to harm, poisons will be ineffective, witchcraft will be impossible, and weapons will be unable to harm. Even emperors will be unable to take advantage. Brahma, Indra, and the Four Heavenly Kings will jointly protect them. Ananda (Ananda), this Dharani-pata (Dharani-pata) was spoken by eighty-four trillion Buddhas.' The Buddha told Ananda (Ananda): 'I also want to repeat the Dharani-pata (Dharani-pata), to bring peace to all beings, to have fame and virtue spread far and wide, to have a dignified appearance, to be full of energy, and to have strong bones and muscles.' English version: Life, that is this Dharani Pata (a type of mantra). Ananda (one of the ten principal disciples of the Buddha), this was spoken by countless billions of Buddhas. Ananda, this Dharani Pata, whether you are traveling, or encounter thieves, or encounter tigers and wolves, or are in water, or offend imperial officials, you should recite this Dharani Pata. Ananda, this Dharani Pata, if tied to a withered tree, even that withered tree will sprout leaves, blossom, and bear fruit, how much more so when speaking Dharma for people, will diseases not be cured? One should chant mantras for all the sick. After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, the venerable Ananda and all those present joyfully accepted and practiced it.
