English version The Dharani Sutra of the Names of All Tathagatas, Spoken by the Buddha Translated by the Tripitaka Master Fa Xian of the Mingjiao Monastery, Grand Master of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices, and Attendant of the Imperial Secretariat, by Imperial Decree, from the Western Regions. Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the Bodhimanda (place of enlightenment) in the great Dharma Field of Magadha (country in ancient India), having just attained perfect enlightenment. He was with eighty thousand Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas (great enlightened beings). There were also eighty-four thousand great Brahma (creator god) kings in the Bodhimanda, all surrounding and gazing upon the World-Honored One. At that time, in the assembly, there was a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva named Avalokiteshvara (the Bodhisattva of Compassion). He rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and, with palms joined, addressed the Buddha, saying: 'World-Honored One, there is a Dharani (mantra) of the names of all Tathagatas (Buddhas). This Dharani of the names of all Tathagatas has been spoken and will be spoken by the Buddhas and Tathagatas in the Bhadrakalpa (Fortunate Aeon), the Vyuhakalpa (Glorious Aeon), and the Nakshatra-kalpa (Stellar Aeon). Now, empowered by the Buddha's might, and for the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings, I wish to proclaim it. May the World-Honored One have mercy and protect me.' At that time, the World-Honored One praised the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva Avalokiteshvara, saying: 'Excellent, excellent, Avalokiteshvara! You are able to generate great compassion for the benefit of all sentient beings and proclaim it as you wish.' Then, having been permitted by the Buddha, the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara again addressed the Buddha, saying: 'World-Honored One, if a person wishes to recite this Dharani, they should first sincerely recite the names of the Buddhas and Tathagatas. English version: If a person hears and proclaims to others the names of such Buddhas and Tathagatas (Tathagata: 'Thus Gone One', an epithet of the Buddha), that person will not hear the name of evil realms for sixty thousand kalpas (kalpa: an aeon, a very long period of time), let alone fall into Avici Hell (Avici Hell: the lowest level of hell in Buddhist cosmology). Te Padma Shanikaya Tathagata Dharani Svaha (19) Padma Hastaya Svaha (20) Sarva Mantra Dharani Svaha (21) At that time, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, having spoken this Dharani, further said to the Buddha, 'World Honored One, this Dharani of the names of all Tathagatas, if there are good men and good women who receive, uphold, read, recite, contemplate, remember, and speak it for others, all their five heinous offenses will be completely eliminated. After the end of their lives, they will be reborn in the heavens as kings, living for eighty-four hundred thousand kotis of kalpas. After that, they will attain the position of a Chakravartin king, living for sixty intermediate kalpas. After these kalpas have passed, they will attain Buddhahood, named Lotus Treasury Tathagata, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly Enlightened One.' At that time, after the World Honored One spoke this Sutra, eighty thousand Bodhisattva Mahasattvas and eighty-four thousand Great Brahma Kings, hearing what the Buddha had said, were all greatly rejoiced, believed, accepted, and practiced it.
