At that time, all the suns, moons, and stars gathered together, surrounding the Tathagata, and said in unison: 'We wish that the Tathagata would speak the divine mantra for us.' At that time, the World-Honored One spoke the Eight Stars Mantra, which is as follows: oṃ sa pta ji na ya bha rja vi ja ya jaṃ pū tha ma sva mi na ra kṣaṃ bha va tu svā hā The mudra (hand gesture) and mantra are found in the 'Seven Stars' chapter of the Vajrasekhara Sutra (Jingangding Jing). The Buddha told Tanlang (Greedy Wolf Star, one of the Big Dipper stars), Pojun (Broken Army Star, one of the Big Dipper stars), and others: 'If there are good men and good women who uphold this divine mantra, will they be protected?' At that time, the Eight Goddesses (Ba Nv, the Eight Goddesses of the Big Dipper) said to the World-Honored One: 'If someone recites this divine mantra every day, their karmic sins will surely be completely eradicated, and all their wishes will be fulfilled. Suppose someone can recite this divine mantra one hundred and eight times every day, they will receive the protection of themselves and all their family members. If they can recite it five hundred times, they will have great divine power, and within five hundred Yojanas (Yujun, an ancient Indian unit of distance), they will be universally surrounded and protected. All the demon kings and all the demon hordes, all those who create obstacles, and countless evil ghosts will not dare to approach and will always be protected. The Eight Goddesses of the Big Dipper, all the suns, moons, and stars, the devas (celestial beings), dragons, and Yakshas (Yaocha, a type of deity) who can create obstacles will all be cut off at once.' -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 坏。若人欲供养者。先发拔济心。于清净寂静之处。以香华饮食供养。持念神咒结印契。如是供养时。八女及一切眷属。现身随意奉仕。成就无量愿求。惹位即得。何况世间少少官位荣耀。若求寿命削定业籍。还付生籍。若诸国王王子大臣后宫等。于自宫中作曼荼罗。如法护摩礼拜供养。北斗八女皆大欢喜。故久居胜位恒常受安乐。百官上下和穆不行非法。人民炽盛稼穑丰饶。国土安宁无有灾难不现异怪。疫病死亡不起。境内怨敌群贼自然退散。故以是法甚为秘密。不信者及无智人中勿妄宣传。无智人不分明心故。不得法意生疑谤。虽无智人金刚生金刚子等。常诵持佛眼母明者当宣传。金刚子虽无智不生疑谤故成就法。行者虽乐世间乐。深回向无上正等菩提。
