English version The Sutra of the Eight Great Mandalas Spoken by the Buddha No. 1168A The Sutra of the Eight Great Mandalas Spoken by the Buddha Translated by Tripitaka Master Fa Xian, Minister of Guanglu, Great Master Mingjiao, Attendant of the Imperial Secretariat, under Imperial Decree, from the Western Regions Thus have I heard. At one time, the Buddha was in the palace of the Holy Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva on Mount Potalaka (Avalokiteśvara's abode). There were countless hundreds of thousands of kotis of nayutas of Bodhisattvas respectfully surrounding him. At that time, in the assembly, there was a Bodhisattva named Ratnagarbha-chandraprabha (Treasure Womb Moonlight). He rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, joined his palms, and said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha, I have something to ask. May the Buddha have compassion and dispel my doubts.' At that time, the World Honored One said to the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Ratnagarbha-chandraprabha: 'You now ask me about the Dharma that I delight in hearing. What is the meaning of this? I will explain it to you.' Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Ratnagarbha-chandraprabha, having heard the Buddha's words, said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, if there are good men and good women who wish to create the Ashta-maha-mandala (Eight Great Mandalas), how should they receive, uphold, respectfully make offerings?' The Buddha said: 'Excellent, excellent! If there are good men and good women who, in accordance with the Dharma, receive, uphold, and respectfully make offerings to these Eight Great Mandalas, they will have great merit, generate wisdom, and benefit immeasurably, even all sentient beings in the three times, and all will attain unsurpassed perfect wisdom. Good man, listen attentively now. I will explain to you these Eight Great Mandalas, which possess the fundamental heart maha-vidya (great mantra) of the Eight Great Bodhisattvas. If you constantly recite, uphold, and respectfully make offerings, all the heavy sins of the five heinous offenses and all evils will be eliminated, and you will be able to achieve the supreme and victorious meaning.' The great mantra is: Om Maha Vira Svaha This is the great mantra of the Buddha's heart. Place it in the center of the mandala and recite this great mantra to offer to the Buddha.
