English version Thus have I heard. At one time, the Buddha was at the Yuanji (auspicious) Bodhimanda (bodhi tree location) under the Bodhi tree. He addressed the assembled Bhikshus (monks), the esteemed Śāriputra (one of the Buddha's ten great disciples, known for his wisdom), the esteemed Ānanda (Buddha's cousin and attendant), and other Śrāvakas (disciples) and great Bodhisattvas, such as Vajradhvaja Bodhisattva (Bodhisattva of the Vajra Banner), Vajragarbha Bodhisattva (Bodhisattva of the Vajra Essence), Maitreya Bodhisattva (the future Buddha), and other Bodhisattva-Mahāsattvas (great beings) in this Bhadrakalpa (fortunate aeon), who were the leaders. At that time, Vajrapāṇi Bodhisattva (Bodhisattva holding the Vajra) said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, Tathāgata Arhat Samyak-saṃbuddha (Thus Come One, Worthy One, Perfectly Enlightened One), I beseech the World Honored One to speak the Good Gate Dhāraṇī (mantra), to provide illumination for all sentient beings, so that they will not be harmed by various evils. Whether it be Devas (gods), Nāgas (dragons), Yakṣas (a type of spirit), Rākṣasas (demons), Kumbhāṇḍas (a type of demon), humans or non-humans, or those who steal people's essence, whether it be by swords and staves, poison, methods of healing with insects, whether it be in eating, drinking, walking, lying down, sleeping, or dreaming, whether it be in feuds and disputes with enemies, or mutual arguments, by reciting this Dhāraṇī, all evils will be unable to harm them.' At that time, the Buddha praised Vajrapāṇi Bodhisattva-Mahāsattva: 'Excellent, excellent, Vajrapāṇi, now listen carefully, I will speak the Good Gate Dhāraṇī for you, in order to seek to protect all sentient beings.'
