English version Śāmihira Sutra No. 750 Śāmihira Sutra Lost in translation, appended to the Records of the Three Qin In the past, there was a young boy named Śāmihira (沙弥罗). At the age of seven, he developed a strong interest in morality and ethics, so he followed a Śrāmaṇa (沙门), becoming his disciple. He lived in the mountains, serving his master's errands; reciting scriptures, never slacking. By the age of eight, he attained the state of Arhat (阿罗汉). His divine eye could perceive everything without limit; his ear could thoroughly hear all good and evil deeds done in heaven and earth; his body could fly, reaching wherever he wished. He could divide himself into tens of thousands of bodies; he could manifest transformations at will, there was nothing he could not do. He knew his past lives, where he came from, and he knew all people, crawling insects, and wriggling creatures. Sitting, he could see his past lives, having been the son of five mothers, at which point he laughed to himself. At that time, his master questioned him, saying to Śāmihira: 'What are you laughing at? There is no singing or dancing here in the mountains, are you laughing at me?' Śāmihira said: 'I dare not laugh at my master, I am laughing at myself! One spirit taking birth, becoming the son of five mothers, five mothers weeping for me day and night, feeling sorrow and pain, unable to stop, always thinking of their son, never forgetting. Thinking of my one body, yet causing five families to grieve, therefore I laugh at myself, I dare not laugh at my master.' 'When I was the son of the first mother, there was a neighbor who also had a son, born on the same day as me. After I died, that child born on the same day would go in and out, walking about. My mother would see him and say: 'Sadly, I think of my son, if he were at home, he would also be going in and out, walking about like that!' Feeling sorrow, tears would fall like rain.' 'When I was the son of the second mother, I died young. My mother would see others breastfeeding their children, and she would think of breastfeeding me, feeling sorrow and pain.' 'When I was the son of the third mother, I died at the age of ten. My mother would be eating, and tears would flow: 'If my son were still here, he would be eating with me; he abandoned me and died, causing' -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 我独食?’

English version 'Am I to eat alone?' (I) sobbed and called to the heavens, uttering words of complaint about my son. 'When I was the son of the fourth mother, I died young due to my unfortunate fate. My mother saw those of my generation marrying wives through matchmakers, and she lamented, saying, 'If my son were alive, he should also be married! What wrong have I committed that my son should be killed?' 'When I was the son of the fifth mother, I was only seven years old, but I loved the Dharma and left home. I abandoned my mother to follow my teacher, entering the mountains to seek the Way. With a single mind, I practiced meditation and attained the state of an Arhat (Arhat, a saint who has extinguished all defilements and entered Nirvana). My mother wept and thought of me every day, saying, 'I gave birth to a son who followed a teacher to study the Dharma, and I don't know where he is now. Is he hungry, thirsty, cold, or hot? Is he dead or alive?' 'Then the five mothers gathered together, each grieving and thinking of my son, weeping together without ceasing. My one soul transmigrated into the wombs of the five mothers to be their sons, relying on both parents to receive form and become human, yet causing the five mothers to weep and go mad, each thinking of my body, even wanting to kill themselves, that is why I laugh!' 'I think of the world, where desires are like a net, karmic conditions bind, and there is the cycle of birth and death, sin and merit, all stemming from actions—evil leads to hell, good deeds lead to heaven. I feared the suffering of the world, so I left home and entered the mountains; diligently practicing meditation and attaining the Way, I ascended to the heavens. I witnessed the suffering of hungry ghosts, hells, and animals, and I felt terror on their behalf, pitying and grieving for the five mothers, unable to liberate themselves, and also worrying about my own body. What I seek is that my actions match my words, to forever escape the cycle of birth and death, to sever the root of the body, like not planting seeds, I should attain Nirvana (Nirvana, the ultimate goal of Buddhist practice, referring to liberation from the cycle of rebirth and the attainment of enlightenment).' After the teacher Shanhui (Shanhui) spoke these words, he flew into the sky. Samiro Sutra (Samiro Sutra) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
