English version: The Buddha said: There was once a wealthy man named Śroṇa Koṭīviṃśa (树提伽, meaning 'one who possesses eighty crores of wealth'). His storehouses were overflowing with gold and silver, and he had rows of servants, lacking nothing. There was a white cloth hanging by the pond, which was blown by the wind to the front of the king's palace. The king convened his ministers to discuss the matter, consulting diviners to inquire about the reason. The ministers all said, 'The country is about to prosper; heaven has bestowed a white cloth.' Only Śroṇa Koṭīviṃśa remained silent. The king said to Śroṇa Koṭīviṃśa, 'The ministers are all pleased, why do you say nothing?' Śroṇa Koṭīviṃśa replied, 'I dare not deceive the king! It is a cloth from my house used to wipe away tears, hanging by the pond, which was blown by the wind to the front of the king's palace. For this reason, I remain silent.' Several days later, there was a flower of nine colors, as large as a cartwheel, which was blown by the wind to the front of the king's palace. The king convened his ministers to discuss the matter, consulting diviners to inquire about the reason. The ministers all said, 'The country is about to prosper; heaven has bestowed a golden flower.' Śroṇa Koṭīviṃśa remained silent. The king said to Śroṇa Koṭīviṃśa, 'The ministers are all pleased, why do you say nothing?' Śroṇa Koṭīviṃśa replied, 'I dare not deceive the king! It is a withered flower from the back garden of my house, which was blown by the wind to the front of the king's palace. For this reason, I remain silent.' The king said to Śroṇa Koṭīviṃśa, 'Your house is indeed so wealthy! I order you to arrange everything in your house, for I will lead two hundred thousand soldiers to your house to see.' Śroṇa Koṭīviṃśa replied, 'I hope that the king will come with me. In my house, there will naturally be beds, without the need for people to spread them; there will naturally be food and drink, without the need for people to prepare them; naturally, people will bring them, without the need to call; naturally, people will take them away, without the need to look back.' The king led two hundred thousand soldiers and entered directly through the south gate of Śroṇa Koṭīviṃśa's house. English version The king said to Shouti qie (a name): 'Is this your child?' He replied, 'I dare not deceive the king! He is a slave who guards the gate of my house.' The king advanced a little further to the inner gate, where there was a young girl with a dignified appearance and plump complexion, who was very lovely. The king said to Shouti qie: 'Is this your daughter or wife?' He replied, 'I dare not deceive the king! She is a maid who guards the gate of my house.' The king advanced a little further to the front of Shouti qie's hall, which had silver walls and crystal floors. When the king saw it, he thought it was flowing water and was afraid he could not proceed. Shouti qie then guided the king forward and invited him to sit on a golden bed and lean against a jade table. Shouti qie's wife came out from behind one hundred and twenty layers of gold and silver curtains and bowed to the king, with tears in her eyes. The king said to Shouti qie: 'Why is your wife weeping as she bows to me? Is she unhappy?' Shouti qie replied, 'I dare not deceive the king! She smelled the smoke from your majesty, and that is why she is weeping.' The king said, 'Commoners burn oil, lords burn wax, and the emperor burns lacquer, but there is no smoke. Why would she weep?' Shouti qie said, 'I dare not deceive the king! My house has a bright moon pearl hanging in the hall, which provides light day and night without the need for fire. Your majesty is a king of smoke, and that is why she smelled the odor.' In front of Shouti qie's hall was a twelve-story tower. Shouti qie took the king up to view it, looking east and west, south and north. The king had been feeling gloomy for a month. The ministers reported to the king: 'The affairs of the state are important, and you must return to manage the people.' The king said, 'In a little while, I can bear it a little longer.' Shouti qie then took the king to the back garden to see the flowing springs and bathing pools, each of which was very beautiful and lovely. The king had been feeling gloomy for a month. English version The assembled ministers sat together discussing and inquiring in detail, wondering about the reason for this. (The king said:) 'Suddhika (a proper noun), is my subject, and his women and residences are even better than mine. I want to attack him. Is it permissible to take him?' All the ministers said, 'It is appropriate to take him.' The king then led an army of four hundred thousand, sounding the bells and beating the drums, surrounding Suddhika's residence with several layers. In Suddhika's gate was a strongman, who wielded a golden club once, and all four hundred thousand soldiers and horses fell to the ground, their hands and feet entangled, their waists and hips twisted, looking like they were drunk, their heads and feet askew, unable to rise again. Suddhika, riding a cloud chariot in the sky, came and asked the people, 'What is your intention in coming here, and why are you lying on the ground unable to get up?' (The people replied:) 'The Great King sent us to attack the elder (referring to Suddhika). There is a strongman in the gate who, with one swing of his golden club, caused all four hundred thousand soldiers and horses to fall to the ground, entangled and twisted, looking like they were drunk, their heads and feet askew, unable to rise again.' Suddhika asked the people, 'Do you want to get up?' All the people said, 'We want to get up.' Suddhika raised a divine staff, causing all four hundred thousand soldiers and horses to rise and return to their country. The king immediately sent a messenger to summon Suddhika: 'I want to ride in the same chariot with you and go to see the Buddha together.' (Upon arriving at the Buddha's place, the king) asked, 'World Honored One! Suddhika is my subject. What merits did he accumulate in his past life, such that his women and residences are even better than mine?' The Buddha said, 'Suddhika, in the past, was the leader of five hundred merchants, leading them with precious treasures through dangerous roads. At that time, in the deep mountains, they saw a sick ascetic, and they provided him with a dwelling, laying out thick bedding; they provided him with water, sugar, rice, and grain; they provided him with lamps and candles. At that time, (they) begged and wished to receive the offerings of heaven; now they have received the karmic reward. Who was the one who gave the alms at that time? It was Suddhika; that sick ascetic was my past self; those five hundred merchants all attained the state of Arhat.' After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, the king and all the ministers generated the mind of anuttara-samyak-sambodhi-citta (unexcelled, complete, and perfect enlightenment), paid homage to the Buddha, and then departed.
