English version Thus have I heard: At one time, the Bhagavan (World-Honored One) was in the quiet Dharma forest of Magadha, seated on a lion throne of a red lotus dais, which was adorned with countless precious jewels and as firm as diamond. He was surrounded by a great assembly of countless Bodhisattvas, equal to the number of dust motes in ten inexpressible kotis of nayutas of hundreds of thousands of Buddha lands, as well as countless beings including gods, humans, and asuras. At that time, in the assembly, there was a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva named Inconceivable Light King, who, by the power of the Buddha, rose from his seat, prostrated himself at the Buddha's feet, and with palms joined respectfully, said to the Buddha: 'World-Honored One! Are there differences in the time divisions and adornments of the Buddha lands, some being superior and others inferior?' The Buddha said: 'Good man! English version Worlds revolve and gradually increase, filling ten inexpressible kotis (a large number) of nayutas (another large number) of hundreds of thousands of Buddha lands, as numerous as the extremely fine dust particles of Buddha lands. In the last of these Buddha lands, one kalpa (an extremely long period of time in Buddhism) in one Buddha land is equivalent to one day and night in the Virtuous Land of the Lotus Virtue World. In that world, all the Bodhisattvas cultivate the supreme Samantabhadra practice ground (the realm of Bodhisattva practice). ‘Good men!’ Just as the days and nights of the worlds gradually increase, so too do the lifespans and physical forms of the Buddhas, as well as the adornments of the Bodhisattvas and worlds, increase. This is because the merits of those sentient beings continuously grow. ‘If there are good men or good women who hear this ‘Dharma Gate of Manifesting the Merits of Boundless Buddha Lands,’ rejoice, believe deeply, uphold, recite, contemplate in accordance with the truth, and widely proclaim it to others, then when they are about to die, countless Buddhas from the ten directions will appear before them, comforting and praising them, causing them to increase immeasurable roots of goodness, and according to their wishes, they will be reborn in the pure lands of the Buddhas, and eventually attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (supreme enlightenment). In life after life, they will always remember their past lives, cultivate the Bodhisattva path, and quickly achieve perfection.’ At that time, after the Bhagavan (an honorific title for the Buddha) finished speaking this sutra, the Inconceivable Light King Bodhisattva Mahasattva (great Bodhisattva), along with all the assemblies of gods, humans, asuras (demigods), and others, having heard what the Buddha had said, were all greatly delighted, believed, and practiced accordingly.
