Sangye Puntsok's Teachings SP17: The Quintessence of Instruction - Naked Seeing of Reality Text: The Quintessence of Instruction - Naked Seeing of Reality Text: The Quintessence of Instruction - Naked Seeing of Reality. Swasti! For those who have received profound instructions on definitive meaning, such as Lamdre (Path and Fruit), but do not know how to practice them properly, settle comfortably on a seat and begin with the preliminary practices of taking refuge and generating Bodhicitta. Then, contemplate intensely on the suffering of Samsara (cyclic existence), the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowment, the impermanence of death, and the faults of Samsara, until the mind trembles. After that, regard all sentient beings as your parents, and determine that the current enemies, friends, attachment, hatred, etc., are all illusory appearances. Embrace all beings with loving-kindness and compassion, and repeatedly pray that all sentient beings may have happiness and the causes of happiness, etc., integrating the Four Immeasurables with your mind. Then, visualize the Lama (Guru) on the crown of your head, pray intensely, visualize the Lama dissolving into yourself, and visualize your own body as a Yidam (deity). Keep the body still, do not blink the eyes, keep the object of focus clear, and keep the object of focus steady, etc., seek a place of rest in the mind through Shamatha (calm abiding). Initially, be focused; in the middle, relax; and finally, alternate between the two. Having found some rest in the mind in this way, then proceed to Vipassana (insight): All external and internal phenomena, Samsara and Nirvana, sentient beings and the environment, the five Skandhas (aggregates), the twelve Ayatanas (sources), the eighteen Dhatus (elements), etc., are not created by Ishvara (a creator god) or others, nor are they established by the external atomic particles, etc., as desired by the Sravakas (hearers) and Pratyekabuddhas (solitary realizers). In short, determine that the reality of all Dharmas (phenomena) is free from all extremes of elaboration, and rest in non-attachment. Then, if it is free from elaboration, how can the various appearances of Samsara and Nirvana arise? This arises from the force of habitual tendencies of the mind's delusion since beginningless time, just like the appearances in a dream, without any difference whatsoever. Therefore, determine that appearances are unreal, like a dream. Since appearances do not cease, understand that appearances and emptiness are like an illusion. Make appearances and mind inseparable, of one taste, like ghee and ghee residue, water and water bubbles, do not cut off the past, do not anticipate the future, do not fixate on the present, cut off all elaborations, and rest in equanimity. What is to be realized is that because the essence is without inherent existence, the seer, the seen, and the act of seeing are not established. As the Lankavatara Sutra says: 'Just as a sword cannot cut itself, just as a fingertip cannot touch itself.' It cannot be cut off, nor is it contemplated.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

‘Likewise, the mind does not see the mind.’ Thus it is said. Its nature is: only on the mind, the basis of the object is not established, and the nature that relies on it is also not established. In the ‘Treasury of the Unborn,’ it is said: ‘The basis of the mother is not displayed, its nature is, free from the proliferation of letters.’ Thus, regarding the nature of the state of looking, it should be ascertained as inexpressible and beyond mind, and until a definite understanding arises, one should repeatedly contemplate, decide, and meditate. If one wishes to rise from meditation, one should first generate the thought: ‘May I not be separated from the experience of equipoise.’ And generate compassion for sentient beings who have not realized the true nature, and also think that even just turning the mind towards such a view has inconceivable merit, so one should dedicate it in common with all sentient beings equal to space. Thinking thus in the mind, one should recite ‘By this merit’ etc. in the mouth, and also dedicate and make aspirations with ‘By this virtue’ etc. During the intervals between sessions, one should not be distracted, and in the illusions that appear, wherever one speaks, one should contemplate its meaning and diligently engage in virtuous actions. This was also done by Sangsgye Phuntshog, who is free from activities. Sarwa Mangalam.
