Explanation of Chapter Eight. Explanation of Chapter Eight. Fourth, showing the way to train disciples, there are ten meanings. First, showing the ability to abandon desire, if someone asks: How can beings who have been bound by the heavy fetters of desire, which have been accustomed to from beginningless time, abandon desire? Just as attachment arising from friendship does not last long for people who are incompatible and unfriendly, because they observe the faults of those people. Similarly, if a yogi knows the faults of all external and internal things, then attachment to those things will not last long either. Not only is desire abandoned by seeing the faults of the object, but it can also be abandoned because it has no basis. In this way, desire depends on the object to be desired and arises, but that object does not exist by its own nature. Because some people are attached to a certain object, while others hate the same object, and still others see it as causing delusion. If the object to be desired were truly existent, then everyone would only generate attachment to it. Therefore, the object of desire is merely a reversed imputation, and does not exist by its own nature. Therefore, yogis can abandon desire by meditating on the emptiness of the object to be desired. Not only is it without self-nature because the object of desire does not exist, but it is also not truly established because there is no cause. In this way, it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara: "Desire, hatred, and ignorance, are said to arise from discrimination." Therefore, with regard to external objects, if there is no improper attention to pleasantness, etc., then the existence of all afflictions such as desire does not exist, because they arise from clinging to things as pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral. If these were truly existent, then who with intelligence would cling to the very existence of these things as dependent on discrimination? Therefore, these are not truly existent, because they depend on the imputation of discrimination, just like mistaking the coils of a rope for a snake. If desire and so on were inherently existent, then they should be binding to children, just as a man is with a woman because of his desire for women.

Regarding bondage, if it is said that women are also bound together with men by the desire that has the realm of men, then there is no such thing as some men being bound together with women, because just as desire is not established by its own nature because it depends on conceptualization, so also men and women are not established by their own nature. If one thinks that one is bound together with another, then it is not reasonable to be separated from it later, since it is bound together with another by its own nature, because there is no change in its own nature. Later, there is liberation from the bondage of desire, so desire is not the cause of bondage by its own nature. Therefore, one should know that desires and so on are empty of their own nature, and that by seeing the emptiness of their own nature, one can abandon them. Secondly, regarding the way in which children do not abandon these, there are two parts: the actual explanation and, incidentally, the failure to attain nirvana due to wrong views. The first part is: If one were to analyze these in detail, one would abandon the afflictions, so why is it that in most cases the afflictions do not appear to be abandoned? Because they lack the cause of abandonment, namely, special devotion to the profound Dharma. Thus, sentient beings with little merit who lack the root of virtue of special devotion to emptiness, who are accustomed to inversion from beginningless time, and who cling to things that are like images as true, think of emptiness as a cliff. Therefore, such sentient beings do not even doubt whether this Dharma of emptiness is so or not, so how can there be liberation for those who are inverted in the cause of liberation? If emptiness is taught in brief, and one doubts whether it is so, then conditioned existence will be made to decay. If the doubter earnestly investigates and ascertains the correct view through scripture and reasoning, then the afflictions will be exhausted and samsara will be cut off. What is the Dharma of emptiness of its own nature, which, when doubted, will cause conditioned existence to decay? That is what the Able One said would not diminish and would increase from the first moment of the path of seeing until liberation is attained, but worldly dharmas are not like that, they will be exhausted by the exhaustion of their ripening result.
