Admonition to the King Admonition to the King First: I, who possess qualities, a virtuous nature, and am worthy of goodness, From the words of the Sugata, For the sake of desiring merit, these noble sounds, I have compiled briefly; you ought to listen. Thus it is said. "Possessing qualities, a virtuous nature, worthy of goodness" is to call upon the king to make him listen to the admonition. Relying on this and becoming familiar with it is quality, which is goodness. Its nature is the cause, that is, arising from the cause of the root of virtue accumulated in the past. Now, having become a vessel for listening to the sacred Dharma, it is called "worthy of goodness." Therefore, you, the king, who have accumulated roots of virtue in the past and have become a vessel for the sacred Dharma, ought to listen. What is it? These verses bound by a composition called "Noble Sounds." How much is the quantity? Because the king is busy with affairs and cannot grasp many texts, therefore, to avoid the fault of many words, it is compiled briefly. By whom? By me, the Bhikshu Nagarjuna. Why compile it? So that you, the lord of the earth, and other sentient beings may also desire the merit that comes from the words spoken and taught by the Sugata, which are the means to higher realms and definite goodness. The means to higher realms and definite goodness, without inversion, are found only in the Buddha's teachings. Outsiders believe that they can attain heaven and liberation through animal sacrifices, asceticism such as pulling out hair, and yoga that meditates on the self. Therefore, it is said, "For the sake of desiring the merit that comes from the words spoken by the Sugata." Because it is thought that desiring the merit taught in the texts of other schools will not accomplish the desired meaning of a person. If you think that you will not listen because this poem of mine does not have a beautiful composition, then, even if the words are bad, because the meaning is good, it is not right to despise it, so it is shown with an example: Just as the body of the Sugata, even if made of wood, No matter how it is made, the wise will worship it. Likewise, even though my poem is bad,

It is not appropriate to criticize for the sake of speaking the sacred Dharma. As it is said, like the body of the Sugata, made of wood, and (Tibetan: རྡོ་བ་དང་འཇིམ་པ་སོགས།) including stone and clay, etc., whether beautiful or not, without looking at the differences in the quality of materials and the beauty of shapes, but relying on the essential differences of the foundation, the wise should make offerings, just like that, my poetry, although it is not beautiful in expression and is bad, but for the sake of relying on the sacred Dharma that is expressed as eminent and will surely become the means of goodness, one should not despise the meaning because of the words, the wise should praise it, and it should also be listened to. If the words are not beautiful, I think that I have already understood the meaning because I have not heard many scriptures of the Sugata before, so there is no need to listen to this, if you think like this, although it cannot make the uncomprehended comprehend, but in order to make the comprehended clearer, it is reasonable to listen, showing with a metaphor: The words of the Great Hero are beautiful, Although you have already understood them in your heart, The palace made of limestone, Why can't it be made whiter by the moonlight? As it is said, because guarding the three doors from non-virtue is victorious, because abandoning all defilements and habits of birth is great, the words of the Buddha Bhagavan are beautiful because they are well spoken, so it is beautiful, all kings, although you have already understood it through hearing, thinking and meditating, but listening to this teaching can also become the cause of making those clearer, so it is reasonable to listen, for example, the palace made of limestone, although it is naturally white, but when illuminated by the moonlight, why can't it be whiter? It can be made whiter, just like that. Admonishing to listen.
