Commentary on Chapter Eleven Commentary on Chapter Eleven Chapter Eleven, refuting the extremes of beginning and end, is divided into two: refuting the beginning of samsara and comparing this reasoning to others. The first is further divided into two: the actual refutation and the incidental refutation of the order of birth and death. The first is: Here it is said, "I exist because samsara exists. If I did not exist, then what would be the cycle of birth and death passing from one to another in the five realms of beings?" Therefore, since samsara exists, the one who revolves exists, and that is me. If you say that if samsara exists, then I also exist, but samsara is merely a term, and in reality, it does not exist. For example, when asked if the prior end is visible, the Great Sage Shakyamuni Buddha said no. Samsara has no beginning and no end, therefore there is no prior end and no posterior end. If there were something called samsara, like a pot and so on, then it would necessarily have prior and posterior ends, but it does not exist. When non-Buddhists asked the Blessed One whether the prior end of samsara was visible, the Great Sage Shakyamuni Buddha said no. Similarly, monks, the cycle of birth, aging, and death has no beginning and no end, thus it was said that samsara has no beginning and no end. Hasn't the Blessed One clearly said that samsara does not truly exist? Therefore, since samsara has no prior end and no posterior end, samsara does not exist, because it has no beginning and no end, like the turning of a firebrand. If samsara has no beginning and no end, even so, it is not negated, because there is a middle, therefore samsara exists. If you say this, for something that has no beginning and no end, where would there be a middle? For samsara, in the way described above, for something that has no beginning and no end, where is the middle that is distinguished by the beginning and end? Therefore, samsara is like space, devoid of beginning, middle, and end, so it is merely a name. The second is divided into two: the actual and the conclusion. The first is: Therefore, for it, prior and posterior, together, and sequential are not reasonable. Because samsara has no beginning, end, and middle, precisely because of this, for the non-existent samsara, birth is prior, aging and death are posterior, and

The simultaneous sequence is unreasonable. How it is unreasonable is shown as follows: If birth comes first, and aging and death come later, then birth has no aging and death, and one will be born even without dying. If birth comes first and aging and death come later, then birth has no aging and death, and it will be separated from them, which is also not acceptable, because it would become an unconditioned phenomenon. If one thinks that birth without aging and death exists, then Devadatta would be born here in another life without dying, and therefore, samsara would have a beginning and would fall into the fault of being without a cause. If birth comes later, and aging and death come earlier, how can aging and death without birth occur without a cause? If birth comes later and aging and death come earlier, since it is said that aging and death are caused by birth, and aging and death are dependent on birth, how can aging and death without birth arise without a cause? It is unreasonable. Birth and aging and death cannot occur simultaneously, because one would die while being born, and both would become without a cause. It is also not acceptable for birth and aging and death to occur simultaneously, because if one dies while being born, it is unreasonable, because they are contradictory like light and darkness, and also because it has not been seen in the world that one dies while being born. Furthermore, if birth and death occur simultaneously, like the left and right horns of a cow, they cannot be cause and effect to each other, and both would become without a cause, which is unreasonable. Second, why elaborate on birth and aging and death that have no sequence of before, after, and simultaneous occurrence? Just like the way of speaking, why do the noble ones elaborate on birth and aging and death that have no sequence of before, after, and simultaneous occurrence when they are not seen? Because they see them as they truly are. Or, if birth and aging and death do not exist, why elaborate on birth and aging and death because children do not exist? Second, comparing this reason to other things: Not only does samsara not have a prior limit, but also cause and effect themselves, as well as characteristics and bases themselves, feeling and the feeler themselves, meaning also

Whatever exists, all things themselves, have no beginning or end. Not only does samsara have no beginning, but also cause and effect, self-character and common character, feeling and the feeler itself, the knowable and the knower, the measurable and the measurer, parts and the whole, qualities and the qualified, etc., any meaningful thing, has no beginning or end. For example, if the cause is before and the effect is after, then the cause without effect becomes causeless. If the effect is before and the cause is after, then the effect without cause also becomes causeless. If cause and effect are simultaneous, then because they do not depend on each other, both become causeless. Likewise, it should be understood for other things as well. Therefore, in the "Noble Cloud of Auspiciousness Sutra" it is said: "When turning the wheel of Dharma, from the very beginning peaceful and unborn, the Dharma of self-nature nirvana, Protector, you have taught." This is the commentary on the eleventh chapter, "Examination of the Beginning and End," of the "Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way." Explanation of the Eleventh Chapter.
