Respectfully submitted to the esteemed Kunsangpa: Regarding your well-being, I am delighted to hear from your letter and the accompanying items that all is well. Here too, I am currently in retreat and in good health. Incidentally, I report that nowadays, the Dharma practice of most Tibetan practitioners is to settle the mind without distraction in non-thought, as the practice of shamatha-vipashyana, and to take this as the essence. This seems to be in accordance with the tradition of the Chinese master Heshang Mahayana of the past. The tradition of Heshang, because it abandoned the cause of non-conceptual wisdom, which is the antidote to the two obscurations, and the discriminating wisdom that analyzes the suchness of phenomena, was seen by the king as a flawed practice, so he invited Kamalashila and refuted the tradition of Heshang. Kamalashila composed the three stages of the "Stages of Meditation" (sgom rim rnam pa gsum), which clearly explain the method of shamatha-vipashyana practice without error. Although there was an unerring practice of this during the early dissemination of the teachings, later this practice was interrupted. The practitioners of the later dissemination understood the shamatha-vipashyana of meditation as conceptual meditation, and therefore did not approve of it. They meditated on the instructions of their own lama lineage, and mainly focused on not meditating on the cessation of thoughts. The Lamrim of the Kagyu lamas is widely explained based on the authoritative treatises of the great chariots such as the "Stages of Meditation". Although it is difficult for beginners to understand, I have written a concise and easy-to-understand summary of how beginners should practice shamatha-vipashyana. Please review this, and if there is anything inappropriate, please write and let me know. As a token of respect for reading the letter, I offer a package of white tea with a tag attached. Offered on the tenth day of the fifth month of the Dragon year, may it be auspicious! Instructions from Donton to Zhang Kunpang Geshe Yungba.
