A Letter to the Teacher A Letter to the Teacher A Letter to the Teacher is present. Homage to the Bhagavan, the Lord of Speech. You were born into the lineage of the Kinsman of the Sun, the supreme leader of eloquent speakers, the teacher known as Gautama, to him I speak thus: Here, some say that your body possesses qualities such as permanence. You speak of transcending existence and non-existence, I believe you have abandoned the extremes of permanence and annihilation. Here, some say that your speech is endowed with various meanings. You teach with speech beyond expression, I believe your teachings are like the sound of thunder. Here, some say that your mind clearly illuminates all knowable things. Your mind is the pacification of proliferation, I believe your mind is like the sky. Your body and the illusionary person, the illusionary person has no birth or death, where there is no birth or death, what is permanence or annihilation? Foolish beings seek permanence and annihilation. Your speech and the sound of thunder, the sound of thunder has no desire to speak, where there is no desire to speak, what is there to be spoken? Foolish beings seek what is to be spoken. Your mind and the expanse of the sky, the expanse of the sky has no conceptual thought, where there is no conceptual thought, what is there to be known? Foolish beings seek what is to be known. Nagarjuna and Asanga, you said they were the upholders of your teachings. Following their treatises, I seek your intention. Here, some take your teachings and, with self-made diverse fallacies, interpret them wrongly with clinging views, making your teachings stained. What is surprising is that worldly materialists, naked ascetics, and others who do not incline towards your teachings, speak contrary to your words. Claiming to be your teacher and holding to your conduct, yet wrongly proving your words, what are these foolish beings doing? To dispel all the key points of view, you taught the nectar of emptiness. Whoever clings to emptiness as true, you have reproached in many ways. Those who abandon conventional truth and say that emptiness is existent, unchanging, and established, are spoken of by stubborn people. How do you regard that, O Sage? You do not accept nirvana, which is the abandonment of samsara. You said that all phenomena of samsara and nirvana are like illusions, false. The sphere of reality is like the center of the sky, permanent.

It is said that it is indeed true. In the Lankavatara Sutra, you clearly stated that the Tathagatagarbha, which possesses qualities such as power, is the definitive meaning, and I am convinced of this. You expressed your intention in an ambiguous way, but people cling to the literal meaning, and under the guise of the Tathagatagarbha, they promote the doctrine of self-grasping. You praised the Middle Way that avoids permanence and annihilation, and condemned those who cling to permanence and annihilation. But now, those with biased views criticize those who speak of the Middle Way, and praise those who perversely speak of purity, self, bliss, permanence, and so on. You said that afflictions such as attachment arise from perverse views. But now, they say that clinging to perverse views such as permanence is the way to eliminate afflictions. All phenomena are like the moon in water, because their individual essences are empty, so you refuted the emptiness that is merely nominal, where things do not depend on each other. They criticize that emptiness of individual essence is annihilation, and praise that emptiness that depends on the essence of others, and that merely nominal emptiness is the most supreme. If you are omniscient, then those who say these things are definitely wrong. Either you are ignorant, or others are omniscient. If you are telling the truth, then those unfortunate ones are deceived by demons. If they are on the right path, then are you deceiving the world? If I speak as you have said, most people will be angry with me. If I speak in accordance with others, I fear that I will fall into a precipice. Therefore, because I cannot find a witness who can stand impartially between myself and others, I present this true accusation to the Teacher. This letter to the Teacher was written by the learned Shakya monk Redawa Shonnu Lodro at Dolok Monastery. May it be virtuous! A Letter to the Teacher.
