Chapter on Observing the Fields of Those to be Tamed Chapter on Observing the Fields of Those to be Tamed Thereafter, on Vulture Peak Mountain, (90a) He resided. When I observed where the field to be tamed was, like a single sun rising in a mirror, without setting, like a wish-fulfilling jewel. Wisdom arising from hearing arises in the lineage, I am not weary of teaching the Dharma to guide beings. Wisdom arising from thinking arises in the lineage, I am not weary of debating with externalists. Wisdom arising from meditation arises in the lineage, I am not weary of the ultimate view of the mind. I am not merely a Buddha in name, but a Buddha who has attained the four fruits of a renunciate. I do not rely on a retinue that speaks Dharma but mixes in errors, I do not teach Dharma to those who hold old Dharma vessels, I do not dwell with those who are oily and flattering, I do not associate with friends who break their vows. Having thought thus, He observed with the eye of wisdom, all sentient beings are obscured by the karma of ignorance, though near, they do not see, they do not know the true face of their own mind, though spoken, they do not hear, darkness and ignorance are far and long, pursuing happiness, they accomplish the suffering of samsara. Since there is not a single field to be tamed, in the stainless radiance of the land of Oddiyana (乌仗那), He thought to explain the meaning of the Dharma to the Dakinis. Like rain ceasing and the sun rising, a rainbow appearing, in an instant He went to He spoke in the secret language of the secret mantra Dakinis, the four assemblies of Dakinis of the ocean island (90b) gathered. Vajravarahi (金刚亥母) revolved like body and shadow, the Nagas of the ocean and the stars of the sky gathered. He taught the Dharma, promised to protect the vows, and their actions turned away from worldly ones. With the eye of wisdom, He observed where the field to be tamed was, and knew that the entire kingdom of Zahor (Sahor) was a field to be tamed. That is, northeast of the land of Oddiyana (乌仗那), in the center of the great city of Zahor (Sahor), in the palace called Ratnapuri, the king of Zahor (Sahor) named Tsuglagdzin (持法者), surrounded by three hundred and sixty queens, and seven hundred and twenty inner and outer ministers, exercising dominion over the entire kingdom of Zahor (Sahor), He saw that king as the field to be tamed. At one time, Queen Hauki dreamed that eight suns appeared at once, and the kingdom of Zahor (Sahor) became desolate, and a turquoise stupa grew on her head. She reported the dream to the king, imagining.

Then a grand ritual was performed. The elderly consort who had the dream showed good omens of giving birth to a son, even though her body was unwell. Her body was light, and her steps were quick. Many gods and goddesses circumambulated her, offering respect and worship. Her nature was joyful, her mind was clear, her complexion was radiant, and her aura was thick. She felt warm and comfortable, and her body was at ease. (91a) The king was informed of such omens. The king was pleased, thinking it was a sign of a prince. He showed great respect and performed grand rituals for the consort. Hoping for a prince, a daughter was born instead. The king was slightly displeased but did not say it out loud. The consort was puzzled, wondering why she didn't give birth to a son despite such dream omens. So, she summoned Brahmin fortune-tellers and asked them to examine the child. She said that these were the dream omens she had while pregnant. The Brahmins bathed the daughter with fragrant water, spread a white felt cloth in the area between sunlight and shadow, and placed the daughter on it to examine her features. The Brahmins involuntarily shed tears. The consort prostrated to the two fortune-tellers, and then, surprised, she said to the Brahmins: "Are the signs of my daughter bad? Whatever the case, please tell me truthfully." The Brahmins said: "The signs are not bad, they are extremely good. She is adorned with the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor marks of excellence. She is beautiful and captivating, never tiring to behold. This is not a human daughter, but a goddess, a wisdom dakini who has come to the human realm. Who will be the householder lord of this girl? What need is there to mention a Chakravartin king? If this girl renounces the world, she will shake the Zahor region in one lifetime. No one else has such excellent signs." Her name was given as the goddess Mandarava. (91b) Her growth was faster than the annual growth of others, faster than the monthly growth. Similarly, her daily growth was faster than her monthly growth. When the goddess was thirteen years old, she was known as a wisdom dakini in all four directions and eight intermediate directions. Many people gathered to see the goddess, and she captivated the minds of those who were attached to samsara. Because a beautiful form is extremely rare, people desired to possess this daughter. The king of India offered excellent horses, jewels, and gold as gifts for the daughter. The king of China offered porcelain, horses, and silk, as well as a hundred giants and a hundred horses as a dowry. The king of Bengal offered elephants and wealth.
