The Chapter on Mastering the Five Sciences The Chapter on Mastering the Five Sciences Then he went to the country of Ragala, and met an old man with white hair and a white beard, called the Friend of all Acharyas. He asked the old man, "What do you know?" He replied, "What is the doctrine of grammar and writing like?" He said, "There is nothing on earth under the sun that can compare with it." I requested him to teach me grammar and writing. Having made this request, he first learned grammar itself. Sanskrit (ལེགས་སྦྱར，संस्कृत，saṃskṛta，refined language) is the language of the gods, Apabhramsa (ཨ་ཝ་བྷྲཾ་ཤ，अपभ्रंश，apabhraṃśa，corrupted language) is the language of secret symbols, Prakrit (པྲ་ཀྲི་ཏ，प्राकृत，prākṛta，natural language) is the language of immediate expression, and Paisaci (བི་ཤཱ་ཙ，पैशाच，paiśāca，flesh-eating) is the language of flesh-eating demons. Grammar includes direct translation, reverse translation, indirect translation, and accomplished translation. He learned one word with many meanings and one meaning with many words. He learned alchemy and the making of jewels, the making of statues, the making of clothes, carpentry, painting, and the making of silver, copper, iron (p.66)ware, and stonework, as well as weaving, sewing, hat-making, casting, and all kinds of knowledge. Then he went to a city, and in a shelter made of bamboo and reeds, there was a lot of smoke, so he went there. A beggar woman was making pottery paint. He said, "Please teach me this method." She said, "You are so wealthy, what are you going to do with pottery paint?" The best method is to mix stones, the middle method is to mix earth, the worst method is to mix ashes, and the even worse is to mix grease. Such knowledge should also be learned, and the experience gained later is the most reliable.
