Explanation of the Preliminary Dharma of Reliance. Explanation of the Preliminary Dharma of Reliance. Firstly, the preliminary dharma of reliance is: First, learn the preliminaries. This indicates that, relying on a qualified lama from the lineage of Jowo (Atisha), one should cultivate the mind in the stages of the three types of individuals until it is fully developed. Having generated the mind of aspiration and engagement, and thoroughly understanding even the instructions, this is necessary as the basis for mind training, therefore it is the dharma that precedes. In order to generate joy at the beginning of each session when meditating on the two bodhicittas, one should think of these dharmas as being important. Think that obtaining leisure and endowment is meaningful, and in order not to waste it, one must practice dharma. Think that this is also the supreme of dharma practices. Even if one obtains leisure and endowment, life is impermanent. In the future, one will experience the happiness and suffering of good and evil, therefore this is also the supreme of virtuous actions. There is also no path more profound than this for liberation from samsara. Think that this is also the supreme cause for attaining Buddhahood for the benefit of oneself and others. Furthermore, it is not always necessary to practice at all times when one wants to practice mind training, but one should also think about it even when one does not want to practice mind training. Explanation of the Preliminary Dharma of Reliance.
