Collected Teachings of Ngawang Kunga Sonam ANK54: A Text on the General Framework of the Nyingma Secret Mantra and the Origin of the Yangsang Pütri (Extremely Secret Razor) of Vajrakila. A Text on the General Framework of the Nyingma Secret Mantra and the Origin of the Yangsang Pütri (Extremely Secret Razor) of Vajrakila. Namo Guru Vajrakilaya! Homage to the Guru Vajrakila) Here, I will briefly discuss the general framework of the Nyingma Secret Mantra. In general, the Nyingma Secret Mantra has two divisions: Kama (oral transmission) and Terma (treasure). From the perspective of Kama, there are numerous Dharma cycles similar to the Sakya's 'Father Teachings,' Yangphur, etc., which have an unbroken lineage from various accomplished masters up to the present. As for Terma, there are the Eight Great Accomplishments. Among these, the generation stage (Mahayoga), which mainly teaches the generation stage, is known as the upper Terma. This is the cycle of the Eight Herukas Gathering of Sugatas, which was brought forth from the treasure of Minling Terchen, the emanation of King Trisong Detsen. The Lung (Anuyoga), which mainly teaches the completion stage, is known as the lower Terma. This is the cycle of the Eight Herukas Secret Complete, which Guru Chowang, the emanation of Minling Terchen, brought forth from the southern Terma. The union of generation and completion stages is taught by Rigdzin Gödem, who brought forth the Eight Herukas Wrathful Spontaneous Self-Arising from the northern Terma. Furthermore, there are the Eight Herukas Wrathful Blazing Mother, brought forth from the treasure by Tulku Dechen Lingpa, and the Mirror of the Mind, brought forth from the treasure by Pema Lingpa, among countless other cycles of the Eight Herukas. When bestowing the empowerment of such complete Eight Herukas, the mandala arrangement is as follows: In the center is the root mandala of the Great Blissful Benefit Supreme; in the east is the mandala of the Mind of Glorious Great Vajra Heruka Yangdak; in the south is the mandala of Manjushri's Body; in the west is the mandala of Padma's Speech; in the north is the mandala of Vajrakila's Activity; in the southeast is the mandala of Manifestation Complete King Unexcelled Heruka Mamo Offering; in the southwest is the mandala of Lama Rigdzin; in the northwest is the mandala of Vajrapani Subduer of All Arrogance Worldly Praise; in the northeast is the mandala of Wrathful Powerful Black One Curse Fierce Mantra. These nine mandalas are placed within a single palace. The number of deities in each of these varies. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Furthermore, adding up all the Dharma protectors of the outer courtyard, there are definitely seven hundred and twenty-five deities. All of these practices, mandala rituals, initiations, etc., should be practiced from the scriptures, which is the supreme practice of the Nyingma tradition itself. Regarding this tradition, the wise ancient masters said: 'The superior should practice from the yellow paper; the intermediate should practice from the accurately copied yellow paper version; the inferior can only practice from word of mouth.' Thus, among the Kagye Branch (a subdivision of the Eight Heruka Sadhanas), which derives from the root Kagye (Tibetan: བཀའ་བརྒྱད, meaning 'Eight Teachings,' one of the most important tantric practices of the Nyingma school), regarding the Dharma cycles of Activity Phurba (Vajrakila), there are: the Phurba Yangsang Pütri cycle brought forth by Guru Chowang from the Southern Treasure (Lho-ter); the Phurba Yangsang Lamé cycle brought forth by Ratna Lingpa from the Treasure; the Phurba cycle brought forth by Rigdzin Gödem from the Northern Treasure (Jang-ter), among which: the Phurba Dharma protectors or Great Excellence (Chechok) cycle associated with the generation stage and Mahayoga; the Phurba Black Deity or Wrathful Mantra (Drakngak) cycle based on Anuyoga; and the Phurba Gathering or Collective Practice (Drildrup) cycle associated with Atiyoga. Thus, before receiving the oral transmissions and instructions of the root and branch Kagye, one must obtain the corresponding initiation of each treasure related to that Dharma cycle. If not, one must also obtain the mandala initiation of any unadulterated Nyingma lineage, such as the Sakya (Sa-lug) Phurba. Even the lowest must obtain initiation into any Anuttarayoga mandala of the old and new tantras. The wise root masters of the Nyingma school have said so. The circumstances of the appearance of the Phurba Yangsang Lamé cycle mentioned here are: Here it is said: The accomplished master Padmasambhava said: 'This profound secret razor Dharma cycle, I hid it as a treasure in the southern Heavenly Ladder Rock.' Later, Guru Chökyi Wangchuk brought it forth from the treasure, spreading and expanding its activity. Thereafter, it was successively transmitted to the Vidyadharas, Longevity Vidyadhara Wangpo Ngawang Lha, the follower Vidyadhara Kuntu Zang, the one holding the fame of the sun of the early teachings, the auspicious and wealthy one holding the victory banner. Until that one, this profound secret razor Dharma cycle, mainly the root part of Phurba.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
