Epistemology. Epistemology. The fourth major field of knowledge is epistemology. In the Compendium of Topics, it says: "Direct perception and inference, along with their semblances, are self-knowing. Statements of proof and refutation, along with their semblances, cause others to understand." As it is said, there are eight terms of cognition: direct perception, inference, proof, and refutation, each of which is divided into two, the valid and the apparent. In summary, there are two ways: the means of understanding what is to be measured by oneself, and the means of causing others to follow after understanding. Furthermore, "valid cognition is unerring knowledge." The meaning of valid cognition is non-deception, that is, a measuring instrument that is not mistaken about its object of measurement. For example, like a bushel and a scale. There are three types of objects to be measured: manifest, hidden, and extremely hidden. The means of measuring them are: for measuring manifest objects, there are four types of direct perception: sense direct perception, mental direct perception, self-awareness direct perception, and yogic direct perception. The means of measuring hidden objects and establishing them are: the three reasons that are the basis of inference based on the power of things. As it is said in the Sutra of Ten Dharmas: "Just as one knows fire from smoke, and one knows water from water birds, so the wise Bodhisattva knows the valid means of knowledge through reasoning." As it is said, it is the reason of the effect. In the Commentary on Valid Cognition, it says: "That which has the characteristic of arising slightly, all of that is the nature of negation." This is like the reason of the nature. Valid cognitions do not enter, and do not enter into non-existence with a result. Depending on the difference of reasons, some do not know the result. As it is said, it is the reason of non-observation. The reason for measuring extremely hidden objects is: because neither direct perception nor the reason of the power of things can be established, it is necessary to rely on the scriptures that are purified by the three examinations in order to understand. Thus, there are three accounts of how epistemology arose. First, the Buddha's teaching is: Monks, the eye consciousness knows blue, but it does not think it is blue. The phrase "knows blue" indicates the knowledge that is not mistaken by the limbs. The phrase "does not think it is blue" indicates the knowledge that is free from conception and not mistaken. Therefore, the characteristics of direct perception are clearly explained. Again, monks

There are two kinds of objects of consciousness: those that rely on the eye and the mind. In the scriptures, "eye" refers to sense perception, and "relying on the mind" refers to mental perception. "The mind has no self-mind; the nature of the mind is luminosity" refers to self-awareness perception. "In all phenomena, the eye of the Dharma is without dust, free from defilements, and utterly pure" refers to yogic perception. Thus, the four types of perception and the basis of inference—the three characteristics—have all been explained in the scriptures as previously stated. Secondly, the way (scholars) explain it is: from the Teacher (Buddha), it was passed down to the Arhat Dharmarakṣita, who passed it on to Paṇḍita Me Weng Gedhe, who passed it on to the great scholar Dignāga. Dignāga also composed a treatise called "Arguments and Proofs" in his youth. Dignāga had four learned disciples, among whom the one who surpassed him in epistemology was Dignāga. Mañjuśrī personally inspired him to compose the Compendium on Valid Cognition (Pramāṇasamuccaya), and to explain this, Dignāga's disciple Īśvarasena listened to Dharmakīrti and composed the Seven Treatises on Valid Cognition: the extensive Commentary on Valid Cognition (Pramāṇavārttika), the intermediate Certainty of Valid Cognition (Pramāṇaviniścaya), and the concise Drop of Reasoning (Nyāyabindu), these three are the main treatises like the body. The four that are derived from them are: the Drop of Reasons (Hetubindu) and Examination of Relations (Saṃbandhaparīkṣā) derived from self-benefit inference, and Establishing Other Minds (Saṃtānāntarasiddhi) and Debate (Vādanyāya) derived from other-benefit inference; these four are the subsidiary treatises. Thirdly, the situation of translation in Tibet: In the early dissemination period, some of the later seven treatises and the commentary of Dulatī were translated. In the later dissemination period, Rma Dgeblo translated the Compendium, the Commentary on Valid Cognition, the Certainty of Valid Cognition, and the great commentary. In particular, Ngok Lotsawa Chenpo made many new translations and revisions, and established them through teaching and practice. The Commentary on Valid Cognition, in relation to the Certainty of Valid Cognition, only maintained the lineage of teaching without being lost. Later, Sakya Paṇḍita emphasized it and established it through translation and explanation. Holy Treasure proofread the length of the Commentary on Valid Cognition at Sangpu Monastery, etc., which made epistemology very prosperous. Epistemology.
