Translator Marpa Lotsawa. Translator Marpa Lotsawa. The translator Marpa Lotsawa was born in Lhopu Chukyer. His father was Marpa Wangchuk, and his mother was Gyalmo Ozer. He was born as their son in the Water Male Mouse year (1012). He went to India five times. The first time, he received the empowerment lineage, sadhana methods, and completion stages of the Lamp Illumination, Mahayana, Hevajra, etc., from Naropa. Then, while benefiting beings in Tibet, he heard that Naropa, near the time of his passing into conduct, had given each of his disciples their respective supports, and left one said to belong to Marpa. So he went to India again to look for Naropa. One day, he met him in a forest grove. He offered gold, but Naropa threw it all away. When Marpa was a little incredulous, Naropa touched the ground with his toe, and it turned into gold. He also said, "Everything is a golden land." Then he disappeared. After that, Marpa returned to Tibet. When he was forty years old, he took Dakmedma as his consort. Hearing the praise of Maitripa, he went to India. He met Maitripa in eastern India and received many tantric teachings. The realization of the Great Seal's instructions arose manifestly, and he sang: "Through the kindness of the great sovereign lord, The ground, the nature of reality, is realized as unborn. The mind has grasped emptiness, From then on, my, Marpa's, elaborations are cut off." After singing this song, he returned to Tibet. After that, he went to India twice more and received many instructions from many panditas and siddhas. He returned to Tibet and carried out the activities of the Dharma, finally passing away at the age of eighty-six in the Fire Female Ox year (1097). Among the countless disciples he had, Ngok Chöku Dorje, Tsur Wangnge, Messton Sonam Gyaltsen, and Jetsun Milarepa are called the Four Pillars. Ngok, Tsur, and Mes held the teaching tradition of explanation.
