At the age of ten, he offered his hair to Panchen Lungrik Gyatso, who bestowed upon him the name Gendun Gyatso. In the same year, he received full ordination from Kunga Delek. He relied on many spiritual friends, including the Khenpos and teachers of previous and subsequent times, as well as Panchen Norzang Gyatso's father, Kunga Gyalwa, Panchen Yeshe Tsem, and Thunyon Gyam. Through studying the vast array of sutras, tantras, and cultural subjects, he comprehended the meaning of all words and concepts. He established the monastery of Gyal Metoktang. He ascended the thrones of Sera, Drepung, and Tashi Lhunpo monasteries, and guided disciples through the activities of teaching, debating, and writing.
