Jowoje Atisha. Jowoje Atisha. Generally speaking, two hundred and fifty-two years after the birth of Songtsen Gampo, in the Iron Ox year, King Relpachen made peace with China. (The following year, in the Water Tiger year, in Lhasa) a stone pillar was erected. Fifteen years after that Water Tiger year, in the Fire Dragon year, King Relpachen was killed by Dharma. From that year until the Iron Hen year, Dharma reigned as king. He destroyed the monastic teachings. During that period of about seventy years, the tradition of the teachings declined in U-Tsang. Then, from both upper and lower regions (it flourished). The way it flourished from Ngari was: the descendant of the Dharma King Trisong Detsen, the Tsenpo Songnge, entrusted the kingdom to his younger brother Khorre and became a monk. He was known as Lha Lama Yeshe Ö. He sent the translator Rinchen Zangpo and twenty-one other young men to India. After that, the pandita Smriti and Jowoje Atisha, Ghayadhara, Panchen Shakya Shri, Drokmi Shakya Yeshe, Rwa Lotsawa, Nya Lotsawa, Xiang Lotsawa, Qiong Lotsawa, and others spread the teachings through translation and explanation, which is known as the Later Dissemination. Among these, to tell a brief history of some of the more famous ones: One hundred and forty years after the Iron Hen year when the teachings were destroyed, in the Water Horse year, Jowoje came to Tibet. At that time, Je Marpa was thirty-one years old. Khon Konchok Gyalpo was nine years old. At that time, Gzus and Drapa Ngonshe also performed the work of khenpo. Drapa's disciple Tsankhawo Che was twenty-three years old, and Gzus's great sons were also there at that time. The main places where Jowo maintained the teachings through teaching and learning were Nyetang, Lhasa, Yerpa, and Phenyul Lanpa, where he taught a lot of Dharma. In the Wood Horse year, on the twentieth day of the middle autumn month, Jowo passed away in Ganden. His disciples were too numerous to count, but briefly, from the written records heard by ear: Lhatsun Jangchub Ö, Khuton, Lochen Rinsang, Dromtonpa, Sharawa, Potowa, Ngok Lekpai Sherab, Gungtang Gompa Tsultrim, Gzus Dorje Gyaltsen, Gos Lotsawa, Sumpa, Nanam, Gya Tson Seng, Shakya Lodro, Tsultrim Jungne, Yolmechen Wangsum, and so on.
