The second great pillar of Central Tibet, Jñanaśrīmitra. ༈ The second great pillar of Central Tibet, Jñanaśrīmitra, is the one who composed the treatise eliminating the two extremes. He was one of the kind lamas of glorious Atiśa. He thoroughly studied the treatises of Nāgārjuna and Asaṅga. In particular, he had extensive knowledge of the scriptures and tantras. Because he constantly cultivated the mind of bodhicitta, Śākyamuni, Maitreya, and Avalokiteśvara repeatedly appeared to him. He possessed unobstructed clairvoyance. Once, while residing in Vikramalā, there was a novice student. There was a great Bodhi temple there, and it seemed that there would be a fire hazard. Therefore, he said, "Go quickly and be sure to arrive in the city of Gaya by noon. There, the monks and caretakers of Vajrāsana have been invited to a Brahmin's festival. Lead them to put out the fire." When he arrived there, he pleaded, "Because it is a prophecy from my teacher, please come." Half of them remained, not quite believing. The remaining half went to Vajrāsana, and the Bodhi temple of Vajrāsana had caught fire, burning inside and out. There, they prayed to the deities and extinguished the fire, so the temple was not greatly damaged.
