Omniscient Friend. Omniscient Friend. The Omniscient Friend was the younger son of a king in Kashmir. As a small child, he was placed on a rooftop, and while his mother went to pick flowers, he was carried away by an eagle and placed on top of a temple in Nalanda. The pandits took him down and raised him. When he grew up, he became very intelligent and became a monk who upheld the Vinaya. By practicing Tara, he saw her face and obtained inexhaustible resources. He gave everything away in charity, so one day he ran out of things to give. Because there were many beggars, he went to a distant place and met an old blind Brahmin woman being led by her son. He asked where she was going, and she said, "The Omniscient Friend gives charity and satisfies everyone." So she was going there to beg. He said, "I am the Omniscient Friend, but all my possessions are exhausted, so I came here." She was very distressed and dejected. He felt immeasurable compassion for her and said, "Do not be sad, I will go and get something." At that time, there was a teacher with wrong views who said to a king named Sarana, "If you buy one hundred and eight people and perform a fire sacrifice, all their merit and power will come to you, and it will also be a cause for liberation." The king bought one hundred and seven people, but when he could not find the last one, the teacher went there and said, "Who is not selling people?" The king said, "I am selling." As payment, gold equal to the teacher's weight was measured out and given to the blind Brahmin, satisfying her, and he left. The people said, "If you had not come, we might have been liberated, but now we will be burned in the fire immediately." They were very distressed. That night, in a wide open space, a pile of wood was stacked like a mountain, and the one hundred and eight people were tied in the middle. The teacher with wrong views performed the ritual. When all the wood was blazing with fire, the one hundred and seven people cried out and were very distressed. The teacher felt immeasurable compassion and fervently prayed to the Holy Tara. The Holy Mother appeared before him and streams of nectar flowed from her hands. In the eyes of the people, the fire disappeared in every direction.

Just in the middle, the rain that fell was as much as a yoke, and the fire was extinguished and turned into a pool. The king was amazed and respectfully offered to the teacher. The people were also sent back to their respective homes. Around this time, the great adept Ḍombī Heruka and, the great adept Vajraghaṇṭāpāda also appeared. About ten years after Virupa attained accomplishment, Ḍombī Heruka attained siddhi. About ten years after that, Ghantapa attained it. After many years had passed, in general, although the Buddhist teachings were very prosperous, in comparison to the time when the Asanga brothers and, Dignāga were alive, in all the regions of the east and south, the heretics were increasing and the Buddhists were declining. Two who were the best among the heretical debaters appeared, named Young Playful One and, Vaiseṣika Śabdika. They seized the possessions and power of Sangharakṣita, Guṇamati, Dharmapāla, and, the disciples of Dignāga, and many Śrāvaka sanghas, and degraded them. At that time, a disciple of the teacher Dharmapāla named Devaśarman began to refute Candrakīrti and composed the commentary on the Madhyamaka, the White Lotus. After debating with some heretics, he also won, and made the king Sālavāhana enter the Buddhist teachings. It is said that he built many temples and stupas, and also established various Dharma foundations. Until the time when the teacher Vasubandhu was alive, the eighteen schools were also almost complete. After that, in those intervening periods, due to the reasons for debate and, accidental factors, various kinds of decline occurred. From the Mahāsāṃghika, the three, Eastern Mountain School, Western Mountain School, and Snow Mountain School, disappeared. From the Sarvāstivāda, the two, the Vātsīputrīya and the Saṃkrantivāda, which separated from the Sarvāstivāda, disappeared. From the Sthavira, the Dharmaguptaka and, the Sannivasin, which separated from the Mahāsāṃghika, disappeared, and the rest remained prosperous. Thus, the practice teachings of the Śrāvakas were like they were declining from five hundred years onwards. However, their sectarian biases still exist to this day. Omniscient Jñānamitra.
