Shantideva. Shantideva. Shantideva was born as a king's son. Due to the power of past karma, he saw Manjushri in his dreams from a young age. Then, on the night of being appointed king, Manjushri sat on the throne and said, "Only child, this is my seat. I am your spiritual friend. It is not proper in any way for you and I to sit on the same seat." After saying this, Tara also poured hot water on his head in the manner of a mother, saying, "Kingship is the hot water of hell." Because of these events, he knew he could not be king and fled. When he arrived in a forest, a woman led him and took him to a yogi in a cave in the forest, where he requested teachings and practiced, attaining inconceivable samadhi and wisdom. It is said that the yogi was Manjushri and the woman was Tara. After that, he always saw Manjushri. Then, he went to the east and had to become a servant of King Simhavarman V. There, he promoted crafts that had not existed before. He also made the king rule the country according to Dharma. The other ministers became jealous and said to the king, "This person is a deceiver, he has even turned the sword into wood." The king said, "Let him show the wooden sword of the tutelary deity." The master said, "If this is shown, it will harm the deity itself." The king became even more suspicious and said, "Even if there is harm, you must show it." The master said, "Then, close your right eye and look with your left eye." When it was shown in that way, the light of the sword caused the king's left eye to fall out. After that, the king knew he was an accomplished one and treated him with reverence. Then, he went to the central region and was ordained by Khenpo Gyalwai Lha and was named Shantideva. There, he stayed with the panditas and mastered all the Dharma, and composed the Compendium of Trainings and the Compendium of Sutras very well. He listened to the Dharma from the noble Manjushri, and day and night he acted as if he were sleeping. Because he showed to outsiders that he did nothing of listening, contemplating, and meditating, the monks deliberated, "His faith offerings are being wasted, he must be expelled. If we take turns reciting sutras, we will exhaust our own energy."

Finally, when it was his turn to recite the scriptures, he initially did not agree. Upon repeated requests, he said, "Then, I will recite from a high throne." Some were doubtful, probably thinking it was to demean him. So they built a high throne, and after he ascended it, he asked, "Should I recite something that has been before, or something that has not been before?" To test him, everyone said, "Recite something that has not been before!" Then he began to recite *Engaging in the Bodhisattva's Deeds*, starting from the verse, "When things and non-things, do not abide before the mind." From that verse, he flew into the sky and passed away. Although his body disappeared, the appearance of his voice did not cease, and in this way, he completely recited *Engaging in the Bodhisattva's Deeds*. At that time, those Panditas who had obtained Dharani kept it in mind. The Kashmiris recorded more than a thousand shlokas, while the Easterners had no more than seven hundred shlokas. The main part included praise and the *Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way*. Among them, the chapters on confession and wisdom were missing. The people of the central region recorded one thousand shlokas, in which there was no praise or vow to compose, but it was considered to be the empowerment of later mantras. People were doubtful about this. Although according to the Tibetan account, he lived in a prosperous city, it was heard that he had gone to Kalinga City and was living there, so three Panditas went there and asked what the differences were between what the three of them had recorded. He said that it should be based on what the people of the central region had recorded. After that, in the south, when the inner and outer parties competed in their ability to debate, he went to a place where the Buddhists could not win. There, the non-Buddhists drew a mandala of colored powders in the sky, but the mandala was instantly blown away by the wind, and the non-Buddhists and all the people who favored them were also carried away by the strong wind and thrown to the other side of a river. The Buddhists were unharmed. After that, he destroyed the non-Buddhist teachings and brought people into Buddhism, causing Buddhism to flourish. That place became known as the place where the non-Buddhists were defeated. In any case, "If the special deity is pleased, the prosperous scene of Nalanda can eliminate disputes. Subduing the strange, the beggar, the king, and the non-Buddhists." It is said that these are seven wonderful stories. Shantideva.
