The Armor of Layman Zhiwa. The Armor of Layman Zhiwa. When the Layman Zhiwa went to Potala, it was at the same time as these events. To tell a little of its history: In the forest of Pundravardhana, this Layman practiced Avalokiteśvara and signs of accomplishment also arose. King Shubhasara dreamed that the Layman should be invited to this land and sent to Mount Potala. So, he gave him a string of pearls and a letter of invitation, and also provided provisions for the journey. The Layman thought: The road is difficult and long, and may even endanger my life, but I cannot break the word to invite the tutelary deity, so he took the letter and set off. Finally, he arrived at the stupa of the glorious Dhana Shri's Isle of Drepung. From there, he went to Potala, passing slightly underground. It is said that now the sea has risen and submerged the land, making it impossible to pass. In those ancient times, there was a road, so he passed through it. There, he encountered a great river that he could not cross, so he prayed to Tara according to the letter, and Tara saved him. Then, he encountered an ocean that he could not cross, and Wrathful One saved him. A fire blazed in the forest, and he could not escape, so Hayagriva sent down rain and saved him. In a terrifying ravine, Ekajati made a snake bridge and saved him. Then, many monkeys as big as elephants blocked the road, and Amoghapasha dispelled them, opened the road, and gave him good food. Then, he arrived at the foot of Mount Potala, but could not climb the rocky mountain, so he prayed to Avalokiteśvara. A bamboo ladder appeared, and he climbed it. All directions were covered in mist, and he could not find the road, so he prayed for a long time, and when the mist cleared, he saw an image of Tara on one-third of the mountain, and an image of Wrathful One on the mountainside, and so on. When he reached the top of the mountain, there was only an empty palace, with no one there except for scattered flowers. He stayed there for a month, praying. One day, a woman came and said that the noble one had arrived, please come here, and led him away. The palace had thousands of doors, and each time a door was opened, a samadhi arose. He directly met the five noble deities and scattered flowers on their bodies.

He offered the king's letter and offerings, and requested him to come to Jambudvipa, which he accepted. He gave the devotee many panas (coins) as travel expenses. "Relying on this much, you will be able to reach your country. When the panas (coins) are used up, more will come." He said, pointing out the way. He also saw the statues located on the hillside and one-third of the way up the mountain. On the day after fourteen days had passed on the way back, he saw the mountain of Pundravardhana and was very happy, buying more food to eat with the remaining panas (coins). Before reaching the king's city, when he was near his hermitage, the panas (coins) ran out. He stayed there, thinking whether the noble one would come, but he did not come. In the middle of the night, he fell asleep and was awakened by the sound of music. When he looked, five deities had actually appeared on the surface of the tree behind him. He prostrated and prayed, asking them to go to the king's land. They said, "If the panas (coins) had not run out in the first place, even so, now we can only stay here." After that, the temple built in that forest became known as the Khasarpani Temple. It is said that this is how it is widely known throughout India. According to the story in the eighth chapter of the Twenty Thousand Verses, the king urged (Avalokiteshvara) to go to Mount Potala three times without any other reason. The first time was because he himself had met him; the second time was to resolve the doubts about the inconsistency between the two texts of the Ornament of Clear Realization. The sangha of Varanasi sent (him) to resolve the doubts, but without requesting a resolution, he invited Khasarpani. When asked Khasarpani, (Khasarpani replied,) "I am an emanation, so I do not know." The third time was to resolve that doubt, and he invited the eighth chapter. In any case, when that devotee was about to be killed by robbers because of his possessions, he knew that this was the result of karma that he was sure to experience, so he offered his head to the noble one. The robbers did the same. The noble one shed tears, and the brain matter flowed to the ground, all of which turned into relics. It is said that since then, (the noble one) has no longer personally accepted offerings. After that, the son of King Sri Harasha, named King Ngangtsul, came and became a king who made offerings to the Three Jewels, living for one hundred and forty years and ruling the country for nearly one hundred years. It is said that this was the late period of the life of Yonten Od. In the east, a king born from the Lichchavi lineage

There also arose a powerful ruler named Singe. At that time, the master Chandragomin was born. Singe's son, King Bharasha, also ruled for a long time. This was the later period of Lekden and Arya Vimuktisena's life. The master Nyima Bebpa, Chokde, a student of Vimuktisena, and Kamalabuddhi, a student of Buddhapalita, in their later years, as well as Yonten Ö's student, Dawa Norbu, and the Khenpo of Nalanda, Gyalwai Lha, all appeared at the same time. In the south, the master Chandrakirti also appeared. It was around the early years of the master Dharmapala, Shantideva, and the accomplished Virupa. It seems that Aryadeva also appeared at this time, because in the Garland of Flowers, translated by Sherab Drak, it says that it was made by Arya Sagala, a student of Arya Sangharakshita. Upasaka Shyiwai Gocha (Layman's Peaceful Armor).
