He became very proficient in the tenets of non-Buddhist schools. Later, he was ordained by a monk named Hasti-datta, who held the tenets of the Haimavata school, and became proficient in the Śrāvakapiṭaka. He requested instructions from his own preceptor, who gave him the instruction to seek the inexpressible self. Although he understood that there was no self after examining and analyzing it there, he opened all the windows during the day and lit lamps in the four directions at night, and then repeatedly looked at his own body, naked, inside and out. When a friend saw him doing this and told the preceptor, the preceptor asked if it was true that he had done so. He replied that he thought he was obscured by obscurations, so he had done so and looked. The preceptor became angry and said, \"You are mocking my tenets, do not stay here!\" and then expelled him. He should have refuted him with reason immediately, but he thought it was inappropriate, so he bowed and left. After that, he went to Vasubandhu and expertly heard all the scriptures of the Great and Small Vehicles. He received a vidyā-mantra from a mantra master, and through practice, he saw the face of Mañjuśrī. Then he stayed in meditation for a long time in a very secluded cave in the land of Oḍḍiyāna. Later, in Nalanda, a non-Buddhist named Durjaya, who was said to see his own deity directly and was very skilled in logic, named Duṣṭajaya, had a debate. Dignāga was invited. Dignāga defeated that non-Buddhist three times and converted him to Buddhism. It is said that he composed many scattered treatises on epistemology and logic there, totaling about one hundred treatises. Later, when he was again meditating in his former cave, he thought that the treatises he had written before had become scattered due to this logical method that had arisen from the power of his extraordinary intelligence, so they should be integrated. Therefore, he wrote the homage and statement of purpose of the Pramāṇasamuccaya: Having become the authority, wishing to benefit beings, The teacher, the Sugata, I prostrate to. In order to establish validity, from all my own treatises." } ] ============================================================

"Tus te (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思) may all the various scattered things be united here." After writing this with stone ash, the earth shook, light spread in all directions, and a great sound arose. A man called Black Brahmin knew that this was an ominous sign. After the teacher went for alms, he came there and erased the words. After erasing it twice like that, he wrote for the third time, "If you erase these for the sake of jokes and jest, do not erase them, because there is a great need. If you want to argue because the meaning is wrong, then manifest your body." After writing this, he came again to erase it after the teacher had gone for alms, but he saw the letters and stopped. There, the teacher, taking the teachings as witness, debated, and after defeating the heretics many times, said, "Now enter the teachings." Then he recited mantras and scattered ashes, burning all the teacher's belongings. The teacher himself was almost burned, and the heretic left. I thought, if I cannot accomplish even the benefit of this one being, what need is there to mention others? Just as I was about to abandon the thought of enlightenment, the noble Manjushri appeared and said, "Child, do not do this, do not do this. If you meet inferior people, evil wisdom will arise. Know that heretics and others cannot harm your treatises. Until you attain Buddhahood, I will be your spiritual friend. In future times, this treatise will become one eye of all treatises." The teacher said, "Many unbearable sufferings are hard to endure, and the mind also delights in actions that are not those of a holy being. It is difficult to meet a holy being, and even if I see your face, if you do not bless me, what should I do?" Manjushri said, "Child, do not be unhappy. I will protect you from all fearful things." Having said this, he became invisible. After that, that treatise was also well composed. Once, while sleeping, he saw the faces of many Buddhas. In the south, he subdued the heretical opponents of different places, and restored the ruined dharma foundations established by the previous teachers. Later, he also brought into Buddhism a minister of the king of Oddiyana (Odisha, approximately 8th-11th century AD), named Bhadrapalita, who was the manager of the king's treasury.
