Ārya Deva. Ārya Deva. In short, at this time, the master Ārya Deva appeared in glorious Nālandā. Tibetans say that he was born miraculously from a lotus in the pleasure garden of the island of Siṃhala, and was raised as the son of a king. However, in the commentary on the Four Hundred Verses, the master Candrakīrti says that he was the son of the king of Siṃhala. In some legends of India, it is also said that the king of Siṃhala, Pañcaśrīgama, had a famous son. When he grew up, he was placed in the position of heir to the throne, but he was particularly fond of ordination. He was ordained and fully ordained by a master named Hema Deva. He became proficient in all three baskets. In order to visit the temples and stupas of various places, he came to Jambudvīpa. He relied on the lotus feet of Nāgārjuna, who was living on the auspicious mountain, and obtained many siddhis such as longevity elixirs, and was eventually entrusted with the essential teachings. After Nāgārjuna passed away, he worked for the benefit of sentient beings, and obtained the necessary materials from mountain gods and tree gods, and built twenty-four temples. At that time, a black Brahmin named Durnirjaya appeared in the city of Lina in the east. The story is as follows: A merchant in the city of Kordanana had ten daughters, all of whom worshipped the deities. The youngest daughter was given as a bride to a wealthy Brahmin named Saṅgaguhya, and later gave birth to a son, who was named Black. Because he was very respectful to his parents, he was known as Father-Slave and Mother-Slave. It is said that Hero, Aśvaghoṣa, Father-Slave, Mother-Slave, Durnirjaya, Dharma-endowed Benefit, and Matijitra are known as alternative names. This is because in the past, when the Bhagavan was teaching the Dharma in the midst of an assembled retinue, a crow dropped bird droppings on his head and flew away. The retinue was surprised and asked what this meant. The Teacher prophesied that this would become a heretical paṇḍita named Aśvaghoṣa in the future. At that time, it is said that the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara in the retinue vowed, "I will subdue that heretic and cause him to enter the seat of the Buddha."

When asked what he desired, he replied that he wanted complete victory in debate. Some say it was the power of, "May all those born from wombs be unable to overcome you." In any case, when the Buddha's teachings were defeated in debate, the Buddhists of Nālandā were unable to debate, so they wrote a letter inviting Ārya Deva, offered a torma to Mahākāla, and prayed. A crow appeared from the heart of the self-arisen stone statue of Mahākāla, tied the letter to its neck, and let it fly away. The Ācārya also knew the time for taming and came relying on the substance of swift feet. On the way, a heretical woman needed the eye of a wise person for the sake of the substance of accomplishment, so he gave her one eye. In about an hour, he arrived at Nālandā. There he tamed the heretics. They could not be overcome even after debating three times. They tried to escape through the sky by the power of mantra, but the Ācārya bound and seized their mantra and imprisoned them in a temple. When they read the scriptures, they saw the sūtra that prophesied themselves, repented for doing what should not be done to the teachings, and took faith in the Buddha and became ordained. Before long, he became a great holder of the Tripiṭaka. In a dream, Ārya Tārā prophesied, "You should praise the Buddha's teachings greatly; the karmic obscurations of sins accumulated in the past will be purified." Encouraged by this prophecy, he composed the "Praise of the Praiseworthy" (bsngags 'os la bsngags pa'i bstod pa) in one hundred and eight verses, and the one hundred and fiftieth praise among all the praises. The praises composed by this Ācārya are as blessed as the words of the Buddha, because the Buddha himself prophesied that he would make praises. Ācārya Ārya Deva stayed at Nālandā for a long time, and finally entrusted the essential teachings to Rāhulabhadra and passed away. Ācārya Ārya Deva.
