The Twelfth Act: Demonstrating Parinirvana The Twelfth Act: Demonstrating Parinirvana ༈ The twelfth act, demonstrating parinirvana, is: Although the body of the Tathagata is ever-present, the manner in which the body that liberates through skillful means demonstrates parinirvana is: In order to subdue those sentient beings who have not been subdued, to show impermanence, to encourage renunciation, and to unite with the Dharmakaya, etc., considering ten purposes. When demonstrating parinirvana at noon on the fifteenth day of the Saga month in the Iron Dragon year (1040), eighty thousand Arhats also entered parinirvana. Ananda and the retinue, including gods and humans, were exhausted by sorrow. In order to repay the Buddha's kindness, and to offer relics and the precious Dharma, they dispelled their sorrow and made offerings with various divine substances. There, the giants of the Kushinagar's Nirvana Stupa built it, and Ananda said to the giants, like a Chakravartin king, speaking this and that to the remains. After seven days of offerings, the remains were placed in an iron coffin, and along with offerings, the giants lifted it, saying, "Let us alone cremate it," but they could not lift it. After allowing the gods to make offerings, the giants lifted it, rising to the height of one tala tree in the sky, entering from the west gate of Kushinagar, which is forty-eight yojanas in circumference, exiting from the east gate, entering from the south gate, exiting from the north gate, etc., circumambulating three times to the right, entering from the east gate, exiting from the west gate, entering from the north gate, exiting from the south gate, etc., circumambulating four times to the left, that is, circumambulating Kushinagar seven times. For seven days, the coffin followed behind, making offerings. On the full moon day, the gods rained down Mandarava flowers, about ankle-deep. The places where the Buddhas had previously passed into nirvana, where there were countless ancient stupas, on the indestructible foundation west of the Hiranyavati River, were moved to the stupa where the giants' headdresses were tied, and built in various ways. Adorned with precious silks, the coffin also slowly descended from the sky, opened, and moved inside, placing the coffin on top, and cremating it with torches, but it went out on its own. Because it did not ignite, they said to Od-sung, "Do not light the torch." Od-sung knew that the Teacher was about to pass into nirvana, and arrived there, greeted by the retinue. Anan

Take. The kings of Lanka, the Licchavis, the evil Yakshas, etc., unaware for about twenty days after the Buddha's passing into Nirvana due to the Buddha's power, came with their four-fold army. King Ajatashatru also sensed it and came. After inviting the relics, they arrived after seven days, made offerings, and cried out, "Please grant us a share of the relics and remains." The Yakshas said, "The relics belong to us, step back!" The gods and humans were greatly agitated. They began to vow to fight, saying, "It is good if you give a share, if not, we will seize it." The powerful Yakshas deployed their four-fold army and prepared to fight with the gods and humans. When they returned, the relics rose into the sky and remained in front of the stupa adorned with Yaksha headdresses. It was Kashyapa himself who took them, and a Brahmin named Breva, an emanation of Manjushri, along with those of the same lineage, circumambulated the four dangerous places. To the army of Yakshas, etc., he said, "Wise ones, the Blessed One praised patience, do not fight for the relics. I will give the relics separately." As he spoke, the armies saw the relics ascending into the sky. They said, "Let it be done thus." Without contention, Kashyapa and the Brahmin divided them into eight parts. The first part was given to the Grass Yakshas, the second to the Evil Yakshas, the third to the King's son Luka, the fourth to the Loud-Sounding King, the fifth to the Brahmin of Jambudvipa, the sixth to the Shakyas, the seventh to the Licchavis, and the eighth to King Ajatashatru. The right lower jaw tooth was given to the Word-Holding King, and the left to the Kalinga King. The Yakshas in the grassland, the evil ones, and Buluka in the place of shaking the land, Tokapa. The Krotias and Rakshasa Nagas in the Lion Island, the Fearless Brahmin in Jambudvipa, the Shakyas in Kapilavastu, the Licchavis in Vaishali, and King Ajatashatru built stupas in the Bright Groves, made offerings, and established festivals, thus it became known as the eight relic stupas. The Grass Yakshas gave the ashes from the cremation of the relics to the Brahmin Nyagrodha, thus in the country of Nyagrodha, there is a stupa of relic ashes, and the eight boxes containing the relics.
