The Sixth Act: Resolving to Renounce the World The Sixth Act: Resolving to Renounce the World Furthermore, regarding the sixth act, which is resolving to renounce the world: When King Śuddhodana and his retinue learned of his intention to renounce the world, they guarded the city with troops, preventing him from leaving. After six days had passed, on the night of the seventh day, he thought that it was inappropriate for his parents to disapprove, so he went to his father and sat down with reverence and humility. He said, "The time for the divine being to renounce the world has come. Please do not be displeased or create obstacles." The king, with tears filling his eyes, said three times, "My son, if you stay here, you will surely benefit me." He replied, "Then, please grant me the method to escape birth, old age, sickness, and death." The king said, "If that is so, may your wish be fulfilled. I rejoice and applaud." After saying this, he prostrated to his father and rode the steed Kanthaka. The four great kings lifted the horse's hooves, and they traveled twelve yojanas to the east, descending from the horse in front of the pure stupa of Vaishali. He removed his ornaments and cut off his topknot himself, becoming a renunciate. When the topknot was thrown into the sky, Indra took it to the heavenly realm, and a festival was held in the Trayastrimsa heaven. There, people built a stupa of faith, which became known as the Topknot Stupa. He thought that he should not wear garments from Kashi, and that it would be good to have garments that conformed to monastic rules. In the past, in the city of Anupama, an old woman who had faith in a Pratyekabuddha offered a saffron-colored robe made of shana cloth. Before she died, she instructed her daughter, "I will pass away. When Shakyamuni becomes enlightened, offer this to him." The daughter, before dying, instructed the tree goddess. Indra learned of this and took the tree goddess, transforming her into the form of a hunter and waiting. Seeing him, he said, "This person is about to renounce the world. Take the garments from Kashi." Thus, he accepted the saffron-colored robe. After that, in Vaishali, he learned and practiced meditation from Udraka Ramaputra, the son of skillful arts, starting from the sphere of nothingness and below, and demonstrated the method of meditation. In Rajagriha, he learned meditation from Arada Kalama, the son of the rigid one, starting from the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception and below, and re-bestowed teachings upon them and their thousands of disciples, attaining the status of a teacher.

He demonstrated the manner (of renunciation). At that time, the king heard that "the prince's attendants have scattered and are wandering." So, three hundred attendants were sent from Serkya, and two hundred attendants were sent from Lhas brtan. Among the three hundred, Kauṇḍinya, Aśvajit, and Vaṣpa were disciples of Long Flight (ring 'phur); among the two hundred, Mingchen and bZang ldan claimed to be disciples of the ascetic's son, Lhag spyod. These five lived together, so these five disciples were known as the Group of Five Ascetics. The Sixth Act: The Act of Definite Departure.
